Couple of tower defense games incoming.

First one up is Defenders of Ardania by Paradox. It looks a little bit like Defense Grid to me which isn't a bad thing with some better graphics. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/03/08/towering-majesty-defenders-of-ardania/

Link with a better video and screen shots http://www.vgblogger.com/?p=8640

And this one looks AWESOME for being a XBLA game, Toy Soldiers with a take on tower defense set in WWI that I never seen before. http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/03/09/tower-defense-game-toy-soldiers/ Due out spring/early summer.

Reading some of the comments they mention some more tower defense games I've never heard of if you want to check them out:

Harvest: Massive Encounter http://www.oxeyegames.com/harvest/

Creeper World http://knucklecracker.com/

Circuit Defenders http://www.sector3.com.au/circuitdefenders.aspx

Toy Soldiers looks awesome and they better have that music in game.

Harvest has been out for a while I thought.

I am not very good at these games but they are good fun. I got all the DLC for Defense Grid on Steam.

My kid was playing the Toy Solider demo on the Xbox360 on Saturday. That game looked really fun and he loved it. I really enjoyed watching him shell infantry and have the "shell cam" view on. Hilarious.

Yeah those listed at the bottom were just games I haven't heard of but being discussed by users in the comment section of Rock, Paper, Shotgun's site.

Odd that 'Dungeon Defenders' isn't noted here, though that is a cross-platform, tower defense hybrid game.

Will have to take a peek at the others.

Maybe I just suck at Tower Defense games but Defense Grid Awakening is the hardest tower defense game I've played. Done a ton of the browser ones but Defense Grid to me is the most difficult one I've played. Many times I'll barely pass each level.

defense grid can be tough, but is made much easier when you realize that all you need to do is choose between two towers on almost all maps: the gun and cannon. It's all about damage per price, and forcing the little guys through a nice, winding maze of death.

Hmm interesting. I use the mortor throwing thingy a lot cus of how much damage it throws. I'll use the cannon next time I play it.

the mortar is good too. is that the "volcano tower?"

most maps, just start making a nice path of machine guns--whichever path will force the dudes to walk around that same line of towers 2x, upgrade those, then add more to the path.

Canons are mostly useful for flying critters, as a fully upgraded one will take most out in one shot. I seem to remember cannons being mostly useful in groups of 4 or so. Great for the hard bosses.

1 or two of the mortar/volcano towers is great on the map, too. sometimes you really do need the slow down tower, but a well designed path of machine gun towers can take care of the speedy boss ship with little effort.

I think the big trick to get perfect scores is to spend as much as you can early on, and as soon as you get enough cash form the first wave, you spend it all again. you will sometimes need the orbital laser to take a few out that make it to the exit.

The trick to high scores is to spend as little as possible.... Save as much as possible and let the interest build. i.e. you want to spend enough to just barely kill each bug in a given wave.

But yeah, gun towers that they have go by twice is key number one. Cannons in the path of fliers. On some maps you might need to build or upgrade a missile tower right before an aerial wave. One to two meteors, temporals, commands at most. Maybe one or two lasers, one early and one late, but usually not necessary. They're fun to watch though. If it's a big map with lots of waves, one inferno very early in the maze, but it isn't necessary. If you do a grinder, concussions.

The leaderboard has some insanely high scores on some maps. I think what they do is build a juggling maze and keep the last waves alive for a very long time letting the interest build. I don't have that much patience.
