I have a Dlink DI-524 router. I connect my desktop directly with wire and a laptop with a standard 822.11g built in wirelessly. All works reasonably well.
I have a problem with the desktop when I download large files. Many times it will download a portion of the file at a reasonably good clip and then stop completely. At that point its dead and I have to restart the download. May get another 10, 20, 50 meg and then it stops. I may have to try many times before it successfully downloads. Could the router be at fault even though I am not using the wireless connection for the desktop?
Second question. Have been looking at a bunch of more modern routers. Am I correct to assume that any router that supports protocals greater than regular 802.11G will be wasted on the laptop unless I get a wireless card for it? Will I see any benefit on the desktop which is wired in?
If the Dlink router is at fault, I will replace it but to spend money on a router's extra features only doesn't seem worth it.
