Those who sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither

-- Ben Franklin

This may be a little FUD, but WTH

When you let people do whatever they want, you get Woodstock. When you let governments do whatever they want, you get Auschwitz.

I made this quote up.

"If you don't live life optimistically, you will live life misty-optically."

Liberty and security are on opposite ends of the spectrum. You have to give up some of one for the other.

100% liberty (anyone can do anything they want) ------------------ a mix ------------------- 100% security (everyone's lives are controlled so as not to harm anyone else)

I believe liberty means you have the right to be un-harmed. Am I wrong?

I'd say the latter can apply to the former as well.

I always hate that quote from Ben. It should actually be "Those who sacrifice the liberties beyond what you need to give up to have a functional society, for security that Ben Franklin disapproves of, deserves neither." I think that long sentance makes sense.

In todays terms.

Searching old ladies at the airport and taking away her bottle of water in order to prevent a few Hajis from blowing up the plain is pointless.

We gave up freedom in the name of security. We've got nothing.

edit: but it wouldn't be politically correct to do otherwise - it would be called profiling.

"Firearms stand next in importance to the constitution itself. They are the American people's liberty teeth and keystone under independence ? from the hour the Pilgrims landed to the present day, events, occurences and tendencies prove that to ensure peace security and happiness, the rifle and pistol are equally indispensable ? the very atmosphere of firearms anywhere restrains evil interference ? they deserve a place of honor with all that's good."
--George Washington

"Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country."
--Theodore Roosevelt

"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of
us, they're behind us...they can't get away this time"
-- Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, USMC

"There are hundreds of millions of gun owners in this country, and not one of them will have an accident today. The only misuse of guns comes in environments where there are drugs, alcohol, bad parents, and undisciplined children. Period."
--Ted Nugent

"The war is coming to the streets of America and if you are not keeping and bearing and practicing with your arms then you will be helpless and you will be the victim of evil."
--Ted Nugent

"If you work at that which is before you, following right reason seriously, vigorously, calmly, without allowing anything else to distract you, but keeping your divine part pure, as if you were bound to give it back immediately; if you hold to this, expecting nothing, but satisfied to live now according to nature, speaking heroic truth in every word which you utter, you will live happy. And there is no man able to prevent this."

"Everywhere and at all times it is in your power to accept reverently your present condition, to behave justly to those about you, and to exert your skill to control your thoughts, that nothing shall steal into them without being well examined."

Marcus Aurelius
