Couple of quick questions RE: Haswell-E

I kinda dropped the ball on my last cpu purchase and went with the locked haswell i7. While it will stay at max turbo at all times and is quick, I tend to notice that in general use environment that the hyperthreading is a waste as it tends to be more "snappy" with it off. In Wildstar it costs me about 15% performance. To be fair, that is the game's fault.

Anyway, to my questions:

1). Is Arctic Silver paste really THAT bad. I've been using the stuff for years and it has never not worked for me. Bearing in mind that I am only looking for about 4.0 to 4.1 oc. I'm certain that my one-fan EVO will hold me back as well.

2). Do you feel that these new pci-e ssds will give real noticable gains and will that functionality be on the mobo for these procs? I assume so given that it is on DC.

Question regarding current rig,

Do I get any benefit at all from keeping the system set at max turbo all the time other than eating more power?

Edit: I know this post could be in one of five forums, sorry about that. I was also wanting to take recommendations regarding a replacement to my Samsung 830. Not that it feels slow, I simply want more space. If these new monster SSDs can give me something tangible in everyday use though, I'd be willing to shell the cash out. Sigh, yea, I bought the titan.
Thanks,

Kenneth

1)No its not that bad. As long as its fairly fresh stuff, I wouldn't hesitate to use it.

2)Maybe maybe not. I have a hard time distinguishing between older SSD's and brand new ones. Sure they benchmark faster, but in my day to day use I hardly notice the increase in speed. I mean, its not like when we went from HDD to SSD. My concern with these newer drives is whether or not they pass trim correctly to the drive...and its nice to have a native NVME driver. Currently windows 8+ works fine on both accounts with windows 7 seemingly lacking. Either way....I think adopting to m2, pcie ssd etc is a bit on the bleeding edge....I'll wait till its cutting edge and less risk of things working "right".

3)Probably not

4)Crucial MX100, Samsung 840 EVO/PRO, Samsung 850. I lik both crucial and samsung, so go with whatever is on sale and suits your budget. I just posted some tests with an 830 vs 830 with caching software vs 840 PRO Rapid enabled take a look if you're interested in the memory and storage subforum.

Thanks, I'll definitely check that piece out. My sammy only has 4.18 TB of writes on it in a year and a half. I should have a good bit of starch left in it.

I'm glad I went ahead and grabbed 8. With 8.1 I don't see what all the fuss is about. My biggest issue with it is the breaking of some of my older games on steam. Looking at you Jade Empire :p

Artic Silver 5 when tested objectively always gets into the top 25% of results, and usually its the best or very close to the best for its cost. Anyone who disagrees needs to post quality testing which proves otherwise because I've seen this AS5 hate debunked time and time again.

Once NVMe hits I expect it to be noticeably better because it will allow significantly higher speeds, lower latency, and less CPU overhead. Firing on all cylinders. However, the ecosystem really isn't there yet for consumers. Id give it another 6 months to a year. The MX100 is a great drive for the in-between
