Couple Diablo II questions...

1. I just installed LoD and one of my characters (the one I'd put the most time into, naturally) isn't showing up at the "select character" screen. The folder containing his file is still on my HD, but I can't access him through the game. Any suggestions? He's a level 37 Barb and I'm gonna be POed if I've nuked him permanently:|

2. Could anyone give me some advice on leveling characters up relatively quickly? I enjoy building up new characters and trying different ways of allocating stat points, but I really hate how long it takes to get a character leveled up to the point he/she is actually fun to play.

Thanks
Fausto

Fausto, what version were you running before you installed LoD? LoD installs as version 1.07 so if your characters were updated to version 1.08 or 1.09 then they won't show up. They are still there, just update D2 again and they will show up. Also, if you want to play those characters in LoD you will need to convert them to expansion characters. You can do this once the characters are visible. The process is not reversible so only convert if you are sure that is what you want to do.

As for leveling, I only play single player so I can't use the Bnet strategies. The best place to gain experience is Act V. The best place in Act V is the Ancient's Way or Baal's place. Also, be aware of the "players x" command. You can type in "players 8", without the quotes, and the game will simulate 8 players. This means the monsters will have 8X the life but they give 5.6X the experience and the drops are much better. x can be any number 1 - 64 but only 1 - 8 work for the experience and drops so only use 1 - 8.

The weird thing is that one of my old characters showed up and one didn't. I don't know what the hell I did that would have that end effect. I'll try updating DII again and see if that resurrects my barb.

Thanks for the advice, BTW.

<< POed if I've nuked him permanently >>

...I'll never understand why people don't backup their data before the update software etc. It takes all of 5 minutes and could save you months of game time.

Hope all works out

For the first question, first off are you playing single player or on the realms? If you're playing on Bnet, then I would email Blizzard tech support and they'll fix it up for you.
It highly unlikely you nuked him accidently as your character is stored on the servers and the only way to nuke him would be to specifiy to delete him.
And the version of LoD doesn't matter, as upon connecting to Bnet, you'll be updated on the spot.

To answer the second question, once again it depends if you play on the realms or not.
If you play on the realms, the key to lvl'ing is to get your guy into Hell Cow lvl as fast as you can.
You'll need help from a buddy with a high lvl character that has all the waypoints to do this.
You'll need to have the high lvl character bring you to each act boss and kill them for you. Don't bother with the side quests unless they are neccessary to complete an act (like maggot lair and Valley of the snakes for act 2)
Repeat for all difficulties until you kill Baal in Hell mode.
Then join a multiplayer Cow game, preferably with a lot of Amazons, and sit back and watch your exp fly. One game with give you like 5 lvl's if you're under lvl 50.

One thing though, right when you hit lvl 20, 40, 60, have someone help kill the Ancients in Normal, NM, and hell respectively. That'll give you a good 3-6 lvl ups. Try to kill the ancients in hell with just one other guy as the more ppl in the game, the harder they get.

Have fun

Ah, thanks for the info. I have very minimal time playing on bnet, so had no idea how people were building new characters and leveling them up so quickly.

Quickly is an understatement.
Ppl can now get to lvl 90 in 5 hrs. 99 in a few days at most... but that's if you don't really have a life and play D2 all day long 🙂
