It's nice to see Sony actually giving themselves good PR for a change. It's not even their responsibility, Best Buy should have been the ones to take responsibilty.

Best Buy should have the ability to scan the package and see if it's been returned once before, which would lend evidence to this couple's story. If they are not equipped to do that, then they should honor all returns, since it's their fault they don't do better checking and tracking and this could happen to any of their customers.

Yeah, to Sony. They got themselves some great PR and it only cost them a $1600 camera.

Does Best Buy print serial numbers on receipts? All stores should do that to cut down on scammers.

Last Christmas one of my best friends bought "Band of Brothers" for his dad, however when his dad opened the package it was missing every single DVD. I thought they were screwed because I couldn't imagine taking it to any retailer and claiming that conveniently all of the DVDs were missing.
Luckily, though, he got it at Costco and Costco is just awesome like that.

Or perhaps open boxes on returns to see WTF people are returning.

Retailers need to start taking note of this.. even if an item is still 'shrinkwrapped', it still could be missing its contents..

Dishonest, corrupt, waste-of-life people sometimes buy expensive electronic items and replace them with items that weigh about the same.. then re-wrap them to look like they haven't been opened.

A friend of mine bought a DVD recorder last year from Walmart.. It had a 2x (an ancient relic) cdrom drive in it instead.. When he told the Walmart management, they refused to take back the box. So, he went back a few days later and didn't tell anyone and they took the box back.

not checking the content of a camcorder and finding a can of pasta sauce is one thing, but expecting the wall-mart employee to tell the diff between a CD-ROM and dvd-burner would take extensive training lol

Same sort of thing happens with expensive video cards all the time - they return it with a NIC inside or something. But even with the most basic training someone should be able to tell the difference between a NIC and a video card. Telling the difference between a CD-ROM and DVD-RW doesn't have to be complicated - just look at the model number. It's in the store's best interests to train their employees thoroughly.

Maybe. Or maybe it's just cheaper to take the occasional loss than it is to higher trainable employees.

Same thing happened to me a couple years ago at wal mart as well. Baught a dvd burner, got home to find a crappy old cd drive in the box. It appeared that somebody baught the drive previously, put his old drive in the box and returned it.
