Mandrake 7.0

First of all - is there a facility like CTRL-ALT-DEL that lets you see programs running in the background? For a couple of days the client on a Celeron 533 was down to 256 kkeys/sec and now it is back up to 1.59 Mkeys/sec. Nothing other than the client running that I'm aware of.

Second - I'd like to bring this computer onto my lan. The others are all running W98SE in a peer to peer. I can't find anything that even looks like letting me do this. Ideas?

Thanks guys.

Danto,

To see running processes, open a terminal and run top.

To share files with Windows systems, you'll need to set up Samba. It's built in to Mandrake, but for us newbies, it ain't easy. However, there's a cool utility that Dougal turned me on to that makes it easier to do a lot of things in Linux, including Samba.

It's called Webmin, and it's a lifesaver.:D

Dantoo, Pay attention now.

<< ..how the hell do you change the time on the desktop clock? >>

First you click on the "DrakConf" icon, then you'll need to log-in with you root password.
Next click on the "Linuxconf - system configuration" block.

Now that will open the "Main" entry to configuring all your Linux system.

To set your clock, click the "Control" tab, and the third box down will be the "date & time" block.

There you can set your "zone" as in time zone, butt you can just leave it blank.
Make sure the "universal format" button is unchecked, unless you want to see "GMT".
Change the hours, minutes and seconds, to military time (IE: hours to 23 for 11:00 pm).
While your at it, make sure the "Date" is also right.

When you get done looking around in there (and I'll bet you do ;))
click the "Quit" button at the bottom.
A control panel menu will show up, just click the "Activate configuratiion" bar, and wait a sec for the settings to take.

Once back at you desktop, right click the taskbar at the bottom (or where ever you put it) and sellect "configure".
Go to "Options" tab, and down toward the bottom, check the "Clock shows time in AM/PM format".

Your done.
/just leave me $$ on the way out ;)

That step by step process is definitely the level of help I need (Bless you Roy, I know you mean well! :))

Nice to see you around LD. Been having a lie down out of the sun?:)

Oh god - now the instructions are being patently rude>>> "tarball"?????? Well I never!!!!!!=O

Dantoo- Yes, KW is much better at 'hand-holding' than I am. I thought you had simply forgotten the command. Well, I'm glad you know what time it is - :)
