The number one requirement is that the band be able to play their instruments at a level that demonstrates mastery to anyone who listens whether they like the music or not.

That's not a bad standard. It's one I usually follow since my preferred music is instrumental, but what about the singers? Pretty much all modern singers have the best studio musicians money can buy, but you couldn't really call them a band. Any member is replaceable, and no one would know the difference.

I guess it depends on the influence the member has on the band. I can't help but think of The Rev and Avenged Sevenfold. Whether or not you like the band, the sound of the band is completely different without him.

I have yet to discover a genre of music that doesn't have a least a few tunes that I have heard that I like, even if I never seek out the genre to listen too on a regular basis.

If you enjoy music you are really doing yourself a disservice if you don't, at least occasionally, look at types of music that are out of your comfort zone.

I mostly concur. I've never heard opera that I like and I don't care for classical.
I have metal, rock, pop, rap, hip hop and country music on my mp3 player that I use most everyday. I have some jazz in my collection but not on the player.

I include voice as an instrument. You might not like opera but, you can't deny the talent. Some artists do have a quality that supercedes their technical skill as in power singers. The biggest complaint I have with many current 'successful' artists is that without the power of the intarwebs, they wouldn't be a tenth as popular as they are because they've rode a trend rather than wowed people with their talent. It's easy to discount that sort of popularity when listening to older music.

I think I'm the only person in the western hemisphere who doesn't prefer Mr. Cash's version of Hurt to the original. His rendition of Rusty Cage, however, is a notable improvement on the forgettable original.
