Story here:

Looks like McCain has more or less given up on reasonable arguments, not that he made many to begin with. But his latest slogan is the culmination of the republican standard character assassination of democrats, or anyone else who disagrees with the way they think the country should be run. When they run out of something to say, they attack their opponent's patriotism. Only thing is, there's a couple problems.
1. Sarah Palin
- McCain acknowledged he was older (read: oldest) than the usual presidential candidates and so had promised to take great consideration to pick someone as VP who would be ready to lead this country through this dangerous time of worldwide war and financial upheaval, someone who would be ready on day one. Instead, facing sinking polls, an unenthusiastic base, and an opponent more popular than jesus, he picked Miss Alaska runner up. The move energized the base and breathed life into his frail, and frankly, boring campaign. Yet Palin is about the most inexperienced person ever selected for VP, has demonstrated no intellectual or policy prowess, and already there are many wondering if she was such a good idea after all. McCain's first major chance to show that he would put the country first by selecting someone ready and able to be president, and he flubbed it by picking a pretty face who hates abortions. That's not putting your country first, my friends.
2. Socialism
- That's right, I said it. "Country First!" ? McCain is telling people to put their country ahead of their own needs, to sacrifice their own priorities for the sake of the greater good. He says Obama is not putting country first, and is therefore not thinking about the greater good. That he is able to make this claim with a straight face while referring to Obama as the most liberal dem in history is pretty ballsy.
It's pretty clear that McCain is thinking "5 weeks, 5 weeks...gotta start throwing the kitchen sink at this one boys! Lie, scramble, attack! Do whatever you have to do!"
I don't know who will win this thing, but if McCain wins, Obama will go back to the Senate, and maintain or increase whatever level of respect people currently have for him, and likely go on to be a leader and strong voice in the party. He's run a strong but fair campaign, and reset the standard for grass roots internet based contribution movements. But I can't imagine that in the case Obama wins, that McCain will come out of this thing with any integrity left. Maybe McCain figures that if he wins, well, the victors write the history books; and if he loses, well, he's old so he won't have to live with his destroyed reputation for very long. But it is sad to see someone fall so low.
