Dear sirs/madams

Previous to my purchase of the GAINWARD geforce 4 ti4200 i owned an ATI 7500. I can hardly see anything special about it.

The graphics seemed to be slightly jerking and by far from being smooth.

I used the mode of OPENGL 1024X768 increased my fps limit from 60 to 99 but it can only hit 70ish.

What other tweaks can i use.

Or download.

Thank you in advance

70fps should not seem slow at all.. but you should be getting more FPS then that in such an old game

Yeah the guy should be getting always getting 99 FPS. Have you installed te latest drivers? Tried OpenGL? My friend had like 30 FPS with a 9700 Pro in Software and got 99 when he switched to OpenGL. The reason for this was that his CS was always reseting the settings and putting them back to the default.

I also know some guy who was getting poor performance from a GF4 depending on the nVidia drivers. He had to go get older ones to have his Counter-Strike play smoothly.

1 - you probably have vertical sync on. turning that will probably make you hit 100 constant. (it did for me on my gf2)
2 - the game is 4 years old. you aren't going to tell much difference from an older card and a newer one since it was optimized for the other see (i.e. my geforce2 mx400 runs CS just as well as my radeon 9500)
3 - go to counterstrikecenter.com and go to their cs commands section. there are a lot of video commands that are on by default that when set to off will make your game run more smoothly.

Silly question, maybe, but how do you check for FPS during a game? Console? Any switches I need to know?

As long as it looks smooth I never really questioned it but it wouldn't hurt to know.

Thanks

What drivers are you using? I used to have the same setup and never went below 99.9fps. Also how much RAM do you have?

I just think that HL is just a CPU hog. Make sure you turn off EVERYTHING before you play, including AIM.(Cuz I found out aim takes 5-10% burst loads something). And if your using Enhancer for your winamp then it should definately stay off.

net_graph "3" will allow you to see your FPS.

you should check if vsync is enabled, and consider getting refreshfix.. which will allow you to set a higher refresh rate in 3D mode.

i doubt it, my xp 2000+ isn't much faster then his and i can run gobs of stuff in the background.

cs is certainly not cpu heavy considering the low end systems its capable of running on.

HL is a crappily coded program.

I had this problem with a P4 2.133/GF4 TI4200. It wouldnt hit anything above 60-70 despite everything that I tried (vsync, background programs, more memory, etc). I did a fresh install of Halflife and then i started to max out at 100 fps again.

Did you remove the ATI drivers completely? Nvidia and ATI drivers dont play nice together. I suggest a reformat if you didnt.

i'm thinking its prolly a driver issue too. make sure u either nuke all ati drivers, or just format and reinstall.

how is it crappily coded if u crapped up your install?

halflife used to run on my p2 400 just fine:p

You need to bring down the console (~) and type the following command:

fps_max 100

that will remove the 70 fps limit you are seeing which is being imposed by the game... not your hardware.

thats probably not it. he says its jerky. even with a limit of 70 his system would run it at 70fps minimum if his systemw eren't hosed. no jerky possible. its like his windows or his drivers are hosed. i bet if he reinstalls drivers or windows it will go away.

yeah, I was just addressing his frame rates....

jerkiness.... not easy to do with a modern machine and that modest game... I agree that the OS/hardware installations are suspect if it can't run smoothly.

I'd guess the hard drive isn't feeding data fast enough to the proc/gpu.

Also, try running the game as your own server, without connecting online. See if it's smooth when it's just you playing on your own computer. That jerking could just be lag/packet loss.
