Counterstrike question

I want to buy Half Life: Counterstrike because everyone says its awesome...do I need to buy Half Life first? is COunterstrike like a expansion pack?

If you buy the retail game at stores then you don't need Half-Life, but if you download Counter-Strike online u need to have the original half-life

I would reccomend buying HL alone if you have #1 a fast connection or #2 you have a friend that can burn a copy of CS and the patches for you. With a 56k modem, I would probably want to just pay a little more instead of spending HOURS downloading the patches, for both HL and CS.
