counterstrike levels question

I got the game fairly recently (after 1.3 came out) considering how long its been around, and had a question about the way the game used to be. One of my friends told me that in cs_siege there was originally an APC at the CT spawn point that you could drive into the level, and that you could go to the top of that tower near the spawn point. Is this true? Why were these things removed? Also why were some of the maps taken out? I found a map called cs_arabstreets that I like, but from what I hear it was removed a long time ago, so its rare to find anyone that plays it. I read the version history but I was wondering if it says anywhere why these things were removed.

Playing from beta3, the changes your friend mentioned aren't quite true. Beta3's cs_siege did not have the APC and had the tower useable for the CTs. The APC was added later and was taken out because it really stunk and was too easily useable to piss people off. The tower was removed from the CTs because it became the campers tower and CTs shouldn't be camping at their spawn on cs_siege.

Maps are generally taken out of Counter-Strike because they have been too large, or too campy, but that is not always the case. Maps like cs_siege and cs_assault are just the "favorites" of the Counter-Strike team and they will not take them out of the basic map pack. If you look at all the older maps, they basically revolve around two choke areas and all newer maps have about three choke points. The difference in maps are easly seen when you compare de_dust vs. de_chateau, or cs_siege vs. cs_italy.

How was it used to piss people off? How far into the level could it get?

The APC wasn't armored, so it really wasn't too helpful in protecting anyone (how many times I killed the APC driver, I don't even know). The APC could get all the way into the Ts base, only if you could navigate well (and not get killed). Last, it was too easy to run over people with it (namely teammates). There were too many times when someone would pop into the driver seat and run over everyone. Better yet, get everyone to pile into the back of the APC, then back the APC into the wall, get out and tell all the Ts where the CTs are. Sitting ducks were the worst offense of the APC thing, next to running over your teammates, so it was just a bad to add the APC overall. A better map, with a better layout, would make the APC more useful.

Is there any place where you can download older versions of CS maps? I think that one might be fun just to mess around with at a lan game sometime.

If you look for classic maps, look for cs_docks, cs_facility, cs_bunker, cs_iraq, cs_ship. Some classic stuff there.

I downloaded a map called cs_siege_old which is apparently the version of siege with the APC..however there is no APC in the level. Do I need a separate model file for it or something?

I imagine you would have to find the particular map file that Vash had indicated had a relatively short life span and then play on a server that happened to be running it.

You know, there is a HL mod called retro cs, you may have more luck with that.
You can check it out here
