Counterstrike connection problems

I hope someone can help me with this. I just upgraded to a slot 1 1Ghz p3 and Abit SH6 motherboard. Whenever I try to play Counterstrike online I'm having problems getting to the game. The same thing happens every time: It connects to the server, precaches resources, then the done precaching message comes up, and that's it. It just seems to stop right there. The computer doesn't freeze up, and I can hit escape to get to the CS menu, but it won't continue to load up the multiplayer game. If I start a LAN game on my computer this doesn't happen, but then I'm only running around by myself. I've downloaded all the new patches and everything. It just started when I put in the new mb and cpu. I did a format and clean reinstall of windows 98, but the problem is still there. Also, I've noticed stuttering that wasn't there on my celeron 450/bh6 combo before, and wonder if it's related. Every so often the computer pauses for just a couple of seconds. Is there some bios setting I need to change? I think they're all correct. I can't think of what it could be. Any help is greatly appreciated.

specs:
Win98SE
p3 1Ghz
Abit SH6
192MB generic pc133
Viper V550 TNT (I know- waiting to upgrade it)
Linksys LNE100TX NIC

Thanks,
