So my friend has the retail version of counter strike that he bought a long time ago. What patch should he get to update to the most current version? and do people still play that version?

If he doesn't, he can download Steam and enter his retail cd-key into the Steam account and download Counter-Strike+updates directly.

download steam
make account
put in cs cd-key
wait until it downloads all the right components
