Counter-Strike Hard Freeze

Okay, to start out, I'm running a laptop with:

-Windows XP Home
-Pentium III @ ~850Mhz
-256MB RAM
-S3 Graphics Savage/IX (16MB)

Obviously those aren't ideal specs for running CS, so I take it down to the bare-bones when running the game (well, generally, too) -- I close every non-critical application and process, including Explorer, which lets me idle at under 40MB. The game runs pretty speedily, no problems there. ...

... But I'm getting random hard freezes where computer's completely dead, and I can't do anything except press the power button when playing. It used to be that I'd get these every now and then when playing, but now they usually hit within a couple of seconds of getting into the actual game. That is, I can run the game fine before launching a map, selecting a team, and actually playing, but after that it freezes.

I've tried this on offline training missions and this happens, so it has nothing to do with online play. Recently I haven't be able to get past the first few seconds of play, but in the past it would last up to long periods before freezing.

In case it's pertinent, I run OpenGL graphics and have DirectX 9 installed. I also have the newest drivers for my graphics card (though those are old and it's a shitty card anyway) -- I don't think any of that's an issue, though, since I can sometimes get the game to run fine for long periods.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

Try running it in software mode and see if it locks up. If no, then its your videeo. New drivers might help.
