Counter-Strike: Global Offensive coming to PSN/XBL

Valve just announced it for early 2012.

Counter-Strike: Global Offensive will be a downloadable title for the Playstation Network, Xbox LIVE and Steam when it is released. It will contain new maps, characters, and weapons and deliver updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, it will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombard, VP of Marketing at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

Some of the rumored features for Counter-Strike: Global Offensive include:

  • Focus on 5v5 competitive play
  • Both Defuse (de_) and Hostage (cs_) map types confirmed!
  • eSports-oriented
  • Competitive and Casual modes
  • Ranked / ladder play for individuals and teams
  • Dedicated servers
  • Gameplay has elements similar to both CS:S and CS 1.6
  • Classic maps (with both minor and major modifications) include: Dust2, Dust, Aztec, Inferno, Nuke, Train
  • Molotov grenade: creates area of fire that slows players crossing through it
  • Decoy grenade: emits fake weapon firing sounds to confuse enemies about your position
  • Bullets penetrate some walls and objects like CS 1.6
  • Many changes to weapons, as well as new weapons
  • Classic gameplay: no ironsights
  • Beta in September or October (Unconfirmed)
Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

I've seen a bunch of "Counter-Strike on console!?!?" posts on Twitter but apparently they forgot that CS was on the OG Xbox.

It'll prob be a nice bit of nostalgia, and if thats what they're going for, I'm all for it. Doesn't sound very ambitious beyond that.

i'm sad, honestly. this is probably why when i read about the PC version it seemed so nerfed.

i mean, i play console games and all, and i'm getting better with multiplayer shooters. but i find 'classically styled' PC games to be preferable- they need things like high player limits (16 good, 32 better as long as you don't have idiot admins packing too many onto small maps), dedicated servers ('least they mention this), real browser, ect. and even if valve is associated, they're probably not doing the real labor on this, which means all 3 versions of the game will probably be identical (though of course not compatible).

but i'm jumping the gun a bit. we'll see what happens. '5v5 competitive play' is what bothers me the most.

Will it have cross-platform online mode? Like people can play with each other regardless of what machine they are running on?

PSN has a competent CS clone called Modern Combat, I paid $2.99 for it. It even has Move support.

Nothing announced yet. PS3 cross-platform play seems possible because of the Steam support. This announcement makes me wonder if Valve and MS will come up with a similar setup for Xbox LIVE.

Sweet. Take an extremely popular PC title and make it retarded so console players can play it too.

No cheaters? Dream on.

Cross-platform competition? You console gamers honestly want to compete against PC gamers? Or are you talking 360 vs. PS3?

Classy.

Sorry, I apologize. Just makes me mad when I see classic games that made PC gaming so great get changed so significantly to work well on consoles too. FIrst BF3, which in the end isn't seeming as bad, and now this.

Theyre not changing CS:S. If that's what you want, continue to play it.

Otherwise, it's time to come to grips with the fact that the industry is more concerned with consoles than PCs. And if all you're going to do is caricature the leading edge of the industry, you're just going to be left out of all the fun. 95-05 sure was the golden era for PC, but that time has passed.

Actually, they are making CS:GO to be a competitive eSport game first and foremost. That's what the devs said when they brought a bunch of competitive CS 1.6 and CS:S players in to test the game out and give their impressions.

It is entirely possible to make a good PC version and console version of the same game without detracting from either.

The entire CS community cried foul when Source was released. They said it was too different and it sucked. Yet it's constantly one of the top played games on Steam along with 1.6. So... there's room for another CS game, and CS fans seem to bitch about everything. If you want to keep playing the same stuff over and over again then you can. I however like change, and want some new twists. I liked what CS:S changed. I may or may not like the new one, but I'm not going to whine just because it's different. And I'm certainly not going to whine because it's on consoles. That's the dumbest cop-out excuse out there.

They remind me of Star Trek geeks, with the different factions (Original, TNG, movies, etc) and constant bitching about every new thing that happens.

Disclaimer: I played CS a lot in the mid 2000's
