i have an athlon 1 gaghertz 266 fsb and 256mb ram. I used to have a geforce2mx and i got 60 fps when i played counter strike. I just got a geforce2 gts 64mb but I still only get 60 fps. I know 60fps is a lot but I was just wondering why there was no change in fps when I got the gts. any ideas???

OK for starters do you have it running at 800x600 ??If so thats why..I have a msi k7t pro 2,thunderbird 1000 @ 1100 running a geforce 2 gts 32 megger. And I get kick a_ _.frame rates at 1152 X 864.One suggestion ! during a game pull down your console pressing the ~ key. Then enter as follows max_fps then press enter that will tell you your max frames per sec.should say 72.5 ....enter max_fps 100 then hit enter..Boy oh boy will you see a world of difference..Try running it at 1152 X 864

I run my Radeon in OpenGL, at any res 1024x768 or lower with FSAA 4x enabled, I pull off 100fps walking around no problem.
Check out my sig---Game Machine.

"max_fps" is not a valid command. Can you double-check on that?

EDIT: I've found other posts where people say to use it, but it doesn't work in my console. V-sync is OFF. Any suggestions?

EDIT2: Correct command is "fps_max"

you only use fps_max to see what the setting is.To set it you have to enteras follows: fps_max 100 make sure there is a space between max & 100.Also make sure to use the _ between fps & max

I don't see why switching to a higher resolution should get more FPS?

Surely with his system more than 800x600 should run great.. but I think its a different problem

Switching to a higher res. does not give you more frame rates. It gives more detail. He was complaining about his geforce 2 gts not having more fps than his old geforce mx.If you look in the benchmarks youll see that the geforce mx all the way up to the geforce 2 ultra has the same fps at 640x480 & 800x600...:) You only see a difference in performance at high res.

You can make the number say anything that you want, but iuf you don't set your refresh setting to higher than 60 Hz, you won't actually get anything more than the 60 that it says now.

Good stuff indeed :)

I was wondering why I was only getting 72fps with my MX2 - I have been playing at 1024 x 768 for ages now and it's been perfectly decent.

I tried out the fps_max command and yes sure eonough "72.0" was the max.

Changed to fps_max 100.0 and now my frame rates are 98,99/100 the majority of the time - the only setting that starts to lower the fps is the 1280 x 1024 - which I am now running it at :)

The fps now only drops down (at the lowest) to 70/80+fps - with 1280 x 1024 which is more than I was playing at with 1024 x 768 previously!

Easily fixed.

You have everything setup correctly, but somewhere you have VSYNC ON. Somewhere in the Nvidia utilities you have to turn off the "Wait for Vertical Sync". Also, you will need an Nvidia refresh rate fix from Tweak3d.net. Increase the refresh rate for the resolution you want your games to play in (I'm sure you don't want 60, I run 1024x768 at 120Hz) to make them look smoother.

Matrox G400 Duel Head 16MB, 800X600 gives me about 60FPS! Me try that max_fps thing when I play it next!

make sure you don't have a max frame rate set. Also, I'm running at 1024x768 @ 75fps. Check out my rig for more info, it's somewhat similar to yours
