Counter Strike and XP problems

I remember when XP first came out, there were alot of people complaining about compatibility with Counter Strike and XP. Would anyone who had problems then mind offereing help with my current problem?
I start up fine most of the time, sometimes it will open up with only a quarter of the screen(The top left part), but usually I start up and play with no problems. The real problem starts when I exit. Once I'm done playing, I always push ESC to get to the main menu and then Quit from there. Once I quit, Counterstrike will kick back to Windows XP, but then my computer will lock up and I have to reboot in order to use my computer again. I have been living with this problem since I installed XP. I justified it by the quick bootup time of XP and the fact that this would only happen one out of every three times. Lately, it's been happening pretty much every time I play Counter-Strike and I am now unable to live with it.
I tried typing /exit in console to quit, but that is even worse than using the menu(complete crash). I have no problems with XP other than this. I love the OS, but this problem is driving me crazy. Please HELP!!!

have you tried just alt-tabbing it to minimize, then closing it with task manager?

Try using the same resolution that you use all the time with your computer every day 600X800? etc. could be that your backing out of one resolution into another that could be different and the transition is a no go....what's your video card? are you running the latest drivers and what settings are you running the game in? if your running a nvidia chipset card have you downloaded the refresh patch? I also believe that Counterstrike really frags out a harddrive big time it's best to run it if possible on a smaller partition so you can defrag frequently without having to wait a long time for the process to complete.

I've been using WinXP since it came out and play CS for several hours every night.
I have not had this problem at all, so I don't think it is XP and CS per se. I second the thought that it is video card and possibly video resolution related.

FYI, my video card is GeForce3 by Gainward. I might also add that my in-game resolution is 800x600 and desktop resolution is 1024x768.

Another thought that just occured to me is to check that your system (eg., cpu, video card, etc) is not overheating. This game is rather demanding as far as hardware is concerned.

It`s a common problem with XP and CS,I know quite a few people that have the problem, the only solution I`ve found that works 100% for me is to play CS in D3D then it never locks up on exit, yes OpenGL does look better but I find I get the same problem as you, also try playing CS in Win98 compatibility mode that might help.

I have seen this happen to many people... try changing the video mode (from opengl to d3d or vice versa) and if that doesnt clear the problem up try some different driver versions. if you are using an nvidia card, you can get a good selection of driver versions here. One of my friends just fixed your exact problems by going from 23.11 to 27.x.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the help. To answer your questions, my desktop is set at 1600x1200 and I run Counterstrike at the max settings(1024x800?) I also use OpenGL and would really rather stick with that rather than go to Direct3d. I have a Geforce3(Asus V8200) so I highly doubt that my video card is overheating. I already have my hard drive partitioned with 10 GB going to my main system(Windows and Apps) so that probably won't help me either. I am going to look for the refresh patch(did this come out recently?) so hopefully that is the problem, I am also going to try the compatibility mode thing and see if there is a more recent version of NVidia drivers out there(I'm on 23.11). Thanks again for all the help.

Ok, everybody, thanks again for all the help. I went ahead and installed the latest Beta drivers 27.70 and it seems to have fixed the problem. Thanks again!!!
