Read the long post if you like. Its the reason I posted this. But the first article will sum it up.

When I installed Personal Firewall 2003 on my new machine my smooth constant 100fps went away to a choppy 50-100fps levels. Once I disabled the firewall the FPS lag was gone and back to 100fps. I am not saying it will work for you since my other machine wasn't affected by it under slightly different testing levels but Personal FIrewall2003 did affect my new machine. Thought I would let others know , because I know there are people out there that do get some weird FPS droppages with pretty darn good setups. When running full detail levels. I know GF2's can run 100fps but when you turn up the detail levels usually slower systems and cards can't stay constant at 100fps full detail.

People who get 100fps please do not bother posting "I get 100fps all the time with my 486 and 2mb video" :)

First off I am very fimilar with Counter Strike and the framerate. Now this fix has worked for me and I proved it by troubleshooting it. For the last year or so(been playin since april 2000) I have noticed sometimes that I would get FPS lag. Now Counter Strike is no extreme game that needs the best system but when you turn of the detail levels like AA and Anistropic Filtering it can cause a constant 100fps to drop into the 50's. Its weird its usually always a FPS drop of half for some odd reason. Now my goal has always been full detail levels(since Gf4) in Counter Strike since its a old game and it really sharpens up the game with everything on. So I have have seen this FPS issue with alot of my different variations of machines I have ran. For the longest time I thought it was either modded model and sprites folders but have troubleshooted it not to be the case. I then always thought it was a server related thing because I noticed LAN games running constant 100fps. Then I proved that wrong. I just built my new system that almost hits a 20,000 score in 3Dmark2001 and when I jumped on CS 1.5 and 1.6 in the last couple of weeks I would run 100fps full detail levels always except for smoke which was great. Today I jumped on and I was getting those droppages in FPS like before. What the hell happened??? What did I do in the last couple of days that could of caused this.

Now in the last couple of days I returned 1gig of HyperX memory because It really did not help the 3dmark score. I knew 2gigs over 1gigs does nothing in Counter Strike but since the 865 chipset recommends 4sticks of this stuff not 2 like most memory I thought maybe it was the issue. HyperX Pc4000 review Now I first thought maybe the lack of of 4 banks(channels) running caused the drop in performance and is what caused the FPS issues all the time in my previous systems. Maybe It was the performance gain that allowed full detail and constant 24/7 FPS. Turns out it was not the case.

Then last night I ran Adaware 6 which caused a missing file in my Roxio software , so maybe that is what cause my FPS droppage. Wasn't sure.

Then also I remember I installed Norton Personal Firewall 2003(which I have always used in this last year with CS) last night. I did allow all my programs full access to the net. So I once I remembered 20mins ago, I went and disabled it not even thinking it would be the fix. What do you know went back to the same 3 servers I was testing this FPS issue at and all the FPS problems were gone on the same maps and settings. WOW. I went and turned the Firewall back on and relogged in and the FPS issues came back. WOW I wonder if this was the cause the whole last couple of years. Its weird I always thought it was the complex models I used or corrupted installs of CS or even poor driver support of old games like CS.

Just tried this claim of the Firewall causing the lag on my other machine. Well it was a different map but the firewall on didn't affect it. I do know for a FACT on this machine I am typing on the firewall is causing my FPS lag. Well maybe you'lls systems config will benefit from this maybe not. It did work for me.

To whoever says 60fps is fine or something similar, steady FPS is the key to CS or precisions shooters. When you get accustom to a certain speed or Framerate you can do better but if it varies it totally throws off the aim for me at least. Being constant is more important than a high FPS that will drop in battles.
