Couldn't DP 1.2 really be a replacement for HDMI?

It's a shame that HDMI got patents because I don't see how HDMI is better, especially compared to Display Port 1.2 and Direct Drive. The processing should never be in the TV anyway, it should be in the source via its software and display transmitter.

Why is HDMI still used given that DP1.2 does more and everything else that HDMI can do better? Do the TV makers have something to make from it?
I've also never understood why monitors need to be different from TVs, due to all the processing that can be done by the source device and the fact that direct drive is possible.

I can't believe so many people are putting up with the sh*tty products the display makers make. We're about to see LCDs replaced with OLEDs which will be inferior to LCDs improved... it would be much easier to make LCDs good than to start something new that will have inherent issues (like blue OLEDs going bad earlier). The LCD makers are making no sincere effort because of managed trade policies, a weak dollar, and the fact that they're protected by patents which allows the old tech to be sat on and prevents new firms and new tech from coming. LG needs to make custom panels and then allow whatever else the end user wants, because they could make money off of that... I ain't replacing my PoS Apple LED Cinema Display until there is something good out there (which may never happen). Completely custom LCD monitors could be profitable especially if they didn't make so many different yet mostly total crap panels... and they don't even do the processing right plus they don't use ultra high quality power supply capacitators.

The tech industry sucks because they do compromises with everything else including but not limited to MP3s, itunes lossy crap, and lossy video on blu ray... too many people act like higher res is everything even though it looks no where near as good as lossless does. Lossy compression is a waste even if lossless compression didn't exist. However, lossless compression exists, so there is zero excuse to present something as videophile when it's lossy and looks all crappy with artifacts all over the screen.

The only way one standard ever replaces another is it needs to be 100% better and DisplayPort isn't.

That's not how standards work....it's all about marketing and $$.

HDMI is the standard because the movie industry forced it down our throats, much like DVD, blu-ray, etc.

The root of HDMI technology is copy protection. The only technology that will replace HDMI is whatever technology has even stronger copy protection.

Don't like it? Start your own electronics company.
I'd rather see the state abolished first.

You're correct about the first. HDMI won out because of patents not because of marketing. They couldn't have had their marketing if they didn't have the revenue from patents.

DisplayPort may not be 100% better, but then what is? DP is better and the state robbed VESA and society. Thanks to the state and its IP legislation, society didn't get what was best and VESA got ripped off just because they were too nice to charge for a superior product.

If there is something that HDMI could do better than VESA's DP or if the former is better in any way, then please let me know🙂

Okay, that makes sense for a short term business perspective and from a CEO perspective. However, the fact that these companies need legislation to make their copy protection work for themselves shows how terribly inadequate they are.

Equipment maker don't mandate it, content owners do.

Anyhoo, HDMI was well established in consumer electronics before DP arrived. So, even putting protection aside, there was no way it would be replaced so abruptly (by CE time standards). Recall that DP and UDI were vying to be the succesor to all PC video interfaces so adoption was delayed.

Yep, DP was never around yet when HDMI was developed and released so I don't see how there was a format war between the two. DP is just barely starting to show up on video cards these days while HDMI is pretty much standard on most midrange cards and up. It's going to be tough to overcome this high of an adoption rate.
