I used to know a fellow that claimed you haven't lived until you've killed someone. He said it was better than sex. He was special forces in Vietnam, which may have had something to do with his opinion.
I guess that's what got him through the war. He embraced the killing, accepted it for what it was. He also told me that when you killed a man it made you feel like a God.thats all kind of messed up.

Working with/in mil, I met a lot of people like you described above. Very quiet regarding past combat stuff. They'd usually talk about it if they knew you and you asked, but didn't advertise it.Was he legitimately ex special forces or was he a poseur? When I was in high school we had a guy who was "head disciplinarian" who was an SASR Vietnam vet. I later read a book called phantoms of the jungle which stated (named him) that he got the first kill for the Australian SAS in Vietnam. I don't think he bragged about it though.
In fact I dealt with him extensively. Given my propensity to get myself in the shit. He was a very normal well rounded dude. Who probably killed a lot of people.
I'd kill either if some loved one was at risk or if I could get a Klondike bar out of it.
