Could you put a 5.4L Ford V8 (the Truck engine) in a 97 Cobra Mustang?

Damn damn damn damn damn.

So much for racing tonight :( (street legal night at Race City)

My friend, just wrecked the engine in his 97 Cobra :( That's gonna suck...

It's repairable....but since it has to get pulled out anyhow...we thought it might be fun to try and mount a 5.4L V8 F150 engine in it :D

HP: 360 @ 4750 rpm, Torque: 440 ft.-lb. @ 3000 rpm in the 5.4L
HP: 320 @ 6000 rpm, Torque: 317 ft.-lb. @ 4750 rpm in the standard.

Obviously we'll have to make room for the blower under the hood, but otherwise do you think it will fit?

That should make it FAAAASSST :D

Ed: Correction, it's a 97 Cobra, the 5.4L engine is from a 99 F150.

Yes the 5.4 will fit (the Super Stallion had a DOHC version of the 5.4)

BTW, the 5.4 does not make 360 hp in any form except for the supercharged Lightning version (if that's the engine you're getting)

just rebuild the motor for low compression and a blower. Those cars make 500-700whp all day long at the stang shop down here.

Yeah it's from a 99 F150 Lightning that looks like it got rear-ending by Mac Truck going 150kph....(my guess...he never told me what happened).

It's an insurance write off, but the guy assures us the engine is in perfect shape, we're going to go have a look at it tommorow or Sunday.
He's going to pull the engine and run it on a hoist for us...and we're going to check it out...

I just wanted to know if it would fit.

Obviously we have to make room for the blower...but I don't know how much wider/longer the 5.4L is than the 4.6L.

500-700whp!!! From the 4.6L??

Wow...that's impressive...I had no idea it could get that high....that might be worth some time & effort (he has a crap car for day to day driving...so it doesn't really matter how long it takes to get the 'Stang up and running).

*SIGHS* so many friends doing cool things with their cars lately :(
It sucks to be the only person in a city with a street-legal race track that has no license :(

WOW!

that would be a frikken beast!

I love that lightning, cant get enough of it.

yeah, i bet it may take some shoehornin, but you could probably get there. the cobra engine is big as hell itself.

jesus! the worst thing that would happen is you dont use a hood!

dude if you don't show at the street races with nitto drag radials or mickey thompsons (with the lettering cut off) you're going to lose plain and simple.

street tires loose, drag radials/slicks win.

That sucks about the truck :( Good for your friend though

I was reading through the article on the Super Stallion and it said they had to get rid of (not sure what that means) of the tall, inner-fender strut towers to make room for the 5.4. (I'm sure a Mustang guy would know what that's about) BTW, that Cobra is going to fly with that engine in it - avg 1/4 mile L isa bout 13.8 or so - in a Cobra that weighs 1000 lbs less, I'm guessing about a 13 second 1/4 mile. (Not to mention there are tons of aftermarket parts for it)

street racers down here roll anything less than 450 at the wheels, you lose.

you're going to seriously need 500whp-700whp and be able to hook up to win some $$ at the street racers, unless your idea of a race is running against a rice burner.

Nah this isn't anything so profound.

This is just a local race course, 1/4 mile strip, 2 mile road course, 1/2 mile oval. On Friday nights they have street-legal night.

You pull your car off the street replace the tires with Slicks and go.

It's just for fun. We aren't making real street rods here. It's not like the road-racing underground anything.

If you lose you lose, if you can win you win.

The guy with the Blown 5.4L is willing to sell it quite cheap because the truck is getting mostly replaced from the Insurance write off. He's willing to let it go fairly cheap before the truck goes the wrecker.

But really it's all just for kicks and giggles. We aren't trying to make a pro-stock street-rod. We don't even care if he wins or not...just good fun :)

PS: Another friend of ours is a GM guy...looking at a new FireBird he wants to tweak up a bit....we have to make sure we can still smoke him ;)
Beyond him, we don't really care if we win or lose to anyone else.

Before now the Cobra's got better gearing in the rear end, and he tweaked the exhaust a little...but nothing major. Just fun :)

there's a car on: http://www.mustangworld.com/ that's a '88 fox body style lx with the 5.4L supercharged lightning engine in it. It sticks above the hood a bit, but that's what the big block hoods are for. :)

there might be newer body styles with the engine too, i just noticed that one earlier today.

<< Yes the 5.4 will fit (the Super Stallion had a DOHC version of the 5.4) >>

This is true to a point. The Super Stallion did have a 5.4 in it, but the necessary modifications of the shock towers and frame made sure that a production car would never see a 5.4 in any flavor. So it will ot just bolt in and there are currently no available hoods that the 5.4 will fit under.

Ronstang - time and money can do anything. (If his friend is willing to try to make it fit I'm sure it would. If I recall right, an issue of MM&FF had a picture of some guy who stuffed the 6.8L V10 from a F350 into a Mustang. Not sure if it actually ran or not)

Damn....that doesn't sound good....how much heavier is the 5.4 than the 4.6?? It needs frame work?

I think that's a little more than he's willing to spend. We can do hood mods....as long as the engine won't impair visibility (the car has to be street legal) it can stick up high...

But frame mods are going a little overboard I think....

Oh well time to repair the 4.6L I guess. Should be fun...I've never really had an engine out and apart before...I'll get to learn lots ;)

He's done it lots, and his brother and dad are big into this stuff to, so they can fix it no sweat (well actually lots of sweat, and grease to ;) but it shouldn't be hard for them)....we just though it would be fun to drop in a blown 5.4L.

Bitch,

I understand that time and money can result in anything. I could get a 5.4 in a '97 Mustang, but I wouldn't want to deal with the problems. It would be much easier to stick a 4.6 back in there, throw a decent blower on it, and blow the Lightnings off the road. The average Joe doesn't have the time, the ability, or the money to accomplish a 5.4 in a '97 Mustang, although the guy in question might.

My Point was that if the car is a Cobra the person would probably not be willing to go to the extent necessary to get a 5.4 in the engine bay because it would ruin the value of the car. Except for the Super Stallion I have never seen a 5.4 in a later model Mustang.

Cool I think I might know the car you speak of :) I'll take a look for it next time I'm there...I'm obviously not going tonight...but I'll probably be out there next friday.

I know two guys that race their frequently.
Matthew races his Silver 93 Mustang Coupe (he also has a 97 Cobra but doesn't have the cash to risk wrecking his engine, so the Cobra is just his road car).

And Mike's an 87 Mustang (everyone I know are ford guys ;))

Do you ever go out their yourself?
I can't drive but I go with Mike and Matthew, and I have two other friends (one being the subject of this thread) trying to get cars together to go out their frequently to (he's only been once in a while, 3 or 4 times I think) :)

But he hurt his Cobra bad today :( After seeing his estimates I see why Matthew chose to stop racing his Cobra....but Jason doesn't really care...he's got too much money...bastard :|

not enough that he'd like to do frame work to fit a 5.4L though...he's going to repair the 4.6 eventually and put it back in.
Mods for the 5.4 + the cost of the 5.4 + the unmodd cost = wasted $$$

I think we'll likely just repair the 4.6L. He could afford to to the 5.4L but I doubt he'll want to.
