Could you live in a tropical paradise (i.e. Hawaii)?

Fiance and I just got back from Hawaii, where we stayed with his brother (in the Army, stationed there for 2 more years before being deployed to Iraq/Afghanistan) for 10 days. It was nice at first, but things got a little boring after awhile... a tropical paradise is fun, but you can only lay out on the beach and swim around for so long. I think I'd get a little stir-crazy if I had to live on a tropical island.

Vacation? Yes. Permanent residence? Probably not.

This is like that "would you let your so service you while you were asleep" thread.

Living in Maui may not be perfect, but it certainly beets the -20 degree temps of a january in michigan.

Musta missed that one 😕

I don't mind Michigan's weather so much. I kinda miss it, it was cool when everything froze over with a sparkly layer of ice.

As long as I get to nail some dude's fiance in the 3rd stall in the women's bathroom, then sure. It would rock.

You miss it because you're nostaligic. Come back here for the winter and i'm willing to bet you'll be complaining just like the rest of us.

My friend was stationed there for 4 years in the army and lived off campus.

He seemed to find plenty to keep himself busy until he snapped and tried to run over some soldiers and was discharged from the army.

So on second thought, maybe its not such a good place to live 😕

Absolutely. I mean, the fact is, if you have a house, in a city, in a tropicial paradise, it's perfect. You got bored. Imagine living in your house, only the weather is never sh!tty outside. Could I deal? Hell yes.

just because he snapped doesn't mean it can be attributed to his living in Hawaii...get real

I couldn't do it. I probably wouldn't wind up trying to kill someone, but I think I'd find it too boring after a while, too expensive, and too nasty humid.

You have to take in to account that if you lived there:

- You'd have a job to busy yourself with everyday
- You'd have friends there you could do things with
- You'd have new/existing hobbies to do
- Perhaps home improvements/maintenence to worry about

There is also the small fact that there is actually more to do there than go to the beach (24hr korean massage parlor anyone? 😉).

Your rationalization of being there is that you'd be on permanent vacation, even then, there is more to do than beach.

Either way though, my answer is yes. Born and spent my younger days in Honolulu, moved to the mainland when my mom got married. Have probably averaged a visit ever year over the past 20 years.

Only recently, since having my own children, have I spent a good deal of time at the beach while there. Simply because my soon to be 6yr old would live on the beach if he could 🙂

I couldn't live there year round. Besides, it's freaking expensive there. Worse even than Cali!

I'll stay here in San Diego thank you very much!

I thought I laid on the sarcasm pretty thick, check your batteries I think your detector isn't working.

FWIW, it was all due to the army that he snapped, guess it just finally got to him.

I think food, etc. is more expensive, but buying a home/condo is much cheaper... condos a couple blocks from the beach are only $250k, in LA they'd be well over half a million. 🙁

Absolutely!

I tired transferring there with my previous Firm. No luck as opening are rare.

I really could imagine playing golf, swimming, snorkeling, surfing and all the other island goodness on a daily basis.

But I'm stuck in the bay area of cali!

Only thing that concerned me was having my daughter over there and her being singled out for not being a native. Yeah yeah, I've seen one too many "Howlie" surfer movies.

I think i could. Like codeyf said, it's not like your vacationing all the time if you lived there. You would have a job and such and real things to occupy yourself with like you do whereever you may live now (hopefully).

I would  but i think the humidity and the tourists would eventually get to me 😛
