I'm starting to look around for one but I'm having trouble picking one out. Budget is $150-200, and VIDEO IS A MUST! I was looking at the Sony S600, but dont know if it's any good. Could you guys help me find one?

WTF!!! AFTER my mom orders the A610 for me, she says that she just got a $100 rebate in the mail and if we return the A610 I can get a camera that costs $100 more. The camera was supposed to come today too!! Anyway, I guess I'll either start shopping around for a camera in the $300 range or I'll think of something else I can buy with $100. WTF :| now we have to return it and everything. Oh well :(. How good is the A700? Better than the a610? Also starting to look into the slim ones, is the SD600 any good?

Get a Canon from Dell. Best Prices after discounts and coupon codes.

Super small, portable, take everywhere: SD450 or SD550 (3X optical, 5 or 6 MP, 2.5"), goes down to about $220 regularly
Cheaper, little bit bigger: A620 (4X optical zoom, 6 MPixel, 2.5" LCD) also around $220
Big Zoom, won't fit in pocket: S2 IS (12X optical, ??, ??) around $275

All canons, all great. Snap to it! ;)

Edit: added average prices

Thanks! One thing I noticed though, the sony is 6MP and cheaper, and this is 5MP and more expensive. Is the quality that much better to justify the extra cost for the 1 less megapixel?

This one has full manual controls. It may not mean much at first, but sooner or later you will want to control the apeture or the shutter priority - or both. This one has excellent white balance modes. It also has crystal clear video - 4x zoom (effective 35-140 mm).

Finally, you can add an adapter from lensmate and use teleconverters - macro rings, polarizers, and the such to this camera - something not easily doable on the other. As far as 1 megapixel goes - unless you are printing above 11x14 or going to heavily crop every shot - 5 megapixels behind canon glass is quality.

Sometimes dell has a good deal - but it is usually killed by the addition of local taxes where I am at.

The s600 is an amazing camera for the price. I just picked one up at a Fry's while I was in LA area last week.

Couple of pics I took while I was there. These were taken on the 3 mp setting.

This was on the 6mp.

Video is pretty good too. Though I don't have a video atm that I can upload somewhere for you to see.

Definatly worth the price.

Stupid photobucket, killed the size of the pics.

Wow thanks for all the advice guys! I'll probably go with the 610, but the 550 looks pretty nice too (the size). hmmmm, I'm gonna look at some more specs.

Another thing to think of: you can get a gig of sd memory for dirt cheap on new egg. You can use up to 2 gig cards in the 610. That is alot of video for cheap.

Sony uses memstick - more expensive.

Quick question, on the website, they say

With a highly flexible movie mode, you can create the movie that's perfect for any application. Select from VGA (640 x 480 pixels) and QVGA (320 x 240 pixels) with frame rates of 30 fps and 15 fps for recording up to 1 hour or 1GB.

I assume they mean 30FPS for 320 x 240 and 15FPS for 640 x 480? It's sorta mixed up and I'm not 100% sure what they mean.

I Second the Canon A610 choice.
That's what I'm gonna get this coming week.
A530/540 are lower class than A610/620.
I've read that 7mp cams take slightly worse quality pics compared to 5mp due to some technical implementations or such (comparing A610 to A620).
OP, check this site http://www.dcresource.com

You can choose either.

In either mode. 15 fps saves space.

OP, it mens they have several video modes wth diff. fps rates. Usually video mode with more fps takes more space but it would allow you to shoot faster moving objects.
Anyway, check the site I posted. It will help you.

Best regards...

I would not worry about the pixel count too much. You can get a crappy 6 megapixel camera that takes 6 million pixels of blurry crap, or you can get a good camera that takes 4 million pixels of sharp, clear image.

The Sony isn't bad, but the Canons are better. I have a 4 MP Canon A80, and I think it takes great pictures. You're going to end up resizing the pictures anyway, since even a 3 megapixel image is too big to see on the screen.

The SD 500 is really nice because of the size, I could just slip it into my pocket, but the A610 is nice because of the quality, this is tough :(

I would recommend going to a store and actually holding a cam in your hand. I've read about a few people who were dead set on buying one particular cam, but once they tried to handle the actual cameras in the store, they bought the totally different one, because it was more comfortable for them to handle it and such.
