About to upgrade from my MSI Pro2A + 1 GB TB (200 FSB) to an
Epox 8K7A
1.33 TB (266 FSB) ...my local guy has the AYHJA stepping for $175.
512 Crucial 2100 DDR
The rest of the gear is coming "along for the ride" and consists of the following:
Matrox G400Max (lots of Photoshop work)
IBM 7200 RPM 20GB HDD
Maxtor 7200 RPM 40 GB HDD
Acer 1208 CDRW
Adaptec 2930CU SCSI controller with zip, Jaz, Plex 40Max CD-Rom and an ancient Ricoh CDR attached
Netgear FA311 NIC hooked to an SMC router/WAP/switch
SB Live
plus a number of USB peripherals
OS = Win98
Whew.
In any case, three converging situations lead to this upgrade:
A) I really liked my old original athlon MB (MSI 6167 with 750 chipset) and I'd like to move to the 760 chipset
B) I use NT at work and it runs all of my memory-intensive apps *much* better than Win98
C) Much to my husband's horror, I've got the upgrade bug again (only 9 months after the last time!) 😱 He's convinced I won't see a difference, humph.
I installed Win 2K on my husband's machine (again with the same MSI board) a while ago, no problems, but I'm a bit confused about what drivers to install and **in what order** on a MB with mixed AMD and Via chips.
I have Win 2K SP2 in-hand. I'm going to do a proper wipe and install, not an upgrade.
Could someone weigh in with some advice? Oh, and one last question, believe it or not, all of the above is running with an Antec PP303X power supply (300W). I have the feeling that I should move up to a 400 W model. True?
