Oh sorry I didn't understand what you mean. Correct, you give them your number so the forwarding can work. But that should only apply for calls. Texts should show up in the Voice app and as a separate bucket unless you use Fusion Messenger or Voice+ or one of those hacky methods to combine the SMS and Google Voice bucket.

iMessage works if most of your friends have Apple. Google Voice actually still works on iPhone for messages/calls too.
