Could this be a scam? I wonder.

I am selling a laptop on Ebay and within 12 hours of the auction start I received the email below. I am trying to count the number of "red" flags going up as I read the buyer's email. The only thing that I question is his method of payment (Bidpay). The #1 red flag is that he is offering me more then the laptop sold for when it was new two years ago! Other flags include that he just joined Ebay in the last 2 days (and he is no longer a registered user), he is in Singapore and he wants it shipped to Africa. I wonder ... what do you think (especially about the way he wants to pay?

"Hello i am Smith James based in washington i will like to purchase this your laptop at the rate of $900.00 with $80.00us dollar for the shipping through AIR MAIL PARCLE POST NOT (EMS) withinsuarnce,i will also make the payment through BIDPAY (western union auction payment)and as soon as you receive the confirmation/approval of the payment i will like you to shipped the gift item to my son schooling in africa through AIR MAIL PARCLE POST as a birthday gift and he want to celibrate his day 8th of Aug 2005.But you have to promissed me that as soon as you receive the confirmation/approval from bidpay you will get back to me and i will send you my son shipping address for the export through AIR MAIL PARCLE POST and you will also receive the Money Order from bidpay in a few day.so if you agree with this you can send me your name, address, phonenumber and i will make the payment then BidPay will get back to you within24hours""

Yeah I'd say it's a scam. Tell the guy the deal is on, then send him a sock or something.

Google for BidPay Scam Ebay and tell us what you think: (here's a starter example)

I verified with BidPay .. they said they never require seller to send tracking number .. so if you encounter buyer who ask for tracking number ... it's 100% scam!!!

I have also just been cheated. I responded to a mail which offered to pay me via bidpay. The chap claimed to be Dr Lionel Stevenson from Canada. He asked me to send the item to an address in Nigeria to his nephew. The agreed trade-in value is good. Out of greediness, I proceeded with the shippment via UPS. I received an email confirmation from bidpay that money order has been purchased and has been send out via first class registered mail through USPS. Upon checking with USPS, it was discovered that no such money order has been purchased. Enquiry from bidpay reviewed that the email was not send from bidpay. Please note that email send from bidpay always ended in XXXX@bidpay.com. UPS tracking reviewed the item was received and signed by someone by the name of "Alex Ng", instead of the Nigerian name send to me.

Sound familiar?

My original post was laced with a lot of saracm. I guess I should be clearer next time ... sorry.

Anything where the buyer requests it to be shipped somewhere in the 3rd world or Eastern Europe is almost certainly going to be a scam.
