Could they make the Windows Store any worse?

Its appalling!

I never use it but apparently the final version of 8.1 pro is out (or has been for awhile, MS seem to think its OK not to tell you this stuff), so Im trying to update.

Logically the first thing I do is fire up Windows update, because that... well it updates windows doesn't it?

Well apparently not.

Apparently its on the windows store, so off I trot and enter the world of the Windows Store. A new era of Microsoft competing with Google and Apple in having an App store.

Or not.

I get this.

non-functional-store.png

So after googling, cmd prompts, changing my account type (no MS I don't want all my crap going into skydrive thanks) and various tinkering I get a working app store.

Great into the app store I go.

Holy hell! So nothing's really organised and its just a big wall of pretty much unsorted crap.

Well Windows 8.x is supposed to have a fantastic search.

Search term "8.1 update". Nope.
Search term "8.1". Nope, lots of random crap though.

Lots of other futile searches later its back to google.

Google takes me to a microsoft page with a link to the update (which is in the app store but doesn't turn up under any search terms I used).

So I get the download going. Do I get any feed back in how its going? Ha!

I get an "Installing Windows 8.1 with Media Center..." dialog but no progress bar at all.

So how is this any better than Microsoft just doing it through Windows update?

If they think that this is going to move people into using the store more often then they are sadly mistaken, after that experience I'm going to do everything I possibly can to avoid it. I was unsure of it before I tried it, After using it I hate it. Its a dysfunctional mess of a store that doesn't even work unless you go out of the store, use a search engine in a browser to find you the link in the first place. It is in short everything an app store should not be.

It was just released today, so I am going to assume traffic is your main problem here.

If it was just download speed that was a problem I'd agree with you, as its not (although I cant tell as the updater doesn't tell you anything) I don't.

The stores been out for ages, theres no excuse for that to still be a steaming pile.

Tell that to Steam.

How did you find it in the store?

Wierd.

I just got some sort of pop up warning me I might have to reinstall my apps if I update.

Is there any way to find out if Windows is actually updating or not? There is zero feedback as to what's going on.

You should see a progress bar when its download and doing the initial install.
once you reboot it should show you a % of install. it should reboot about 2 or 3 times.

as for the store apps, they may need to be reinstalled but heard that the icon should be there and just have to tap/click to re-install it

most windows apps should migrate over fine, at least they seemed to for me

I just clicked on Store tile and it was at the start there,it tells you when it's updating via Store you get a percentage if you mouse over the progress bar.

No progress bar on download or install. Or did I need to keep the store app open full screen all the time? In my store app I just had that message at the top till it disappeared then there was absolutely no feedback until the reboot warning.

I'm on the setting up post reboot page now with the %. Not worried about any store apps as I don't have any. Not looking forward to installing all my real apps though.

Honestly it's the worst Microsoft update experience I can recall. I can't see any advantage of this over using windows update at all.

It also doesn't remember your network key and for some reason wants to use my secondary portrait monitor as my primary landscape one for the install.

Calm down, since when has installing service packs on day one become a good idea?

Problems can be different for everyone but the typical one being MS sp are notorious for upgrade problems when released and perhaps you see no progress bar because it is waiting for something, maybe info to or from a server that is in high demand or your pc or a corrupt file, registry unaware to you, is holding it or freezing it, takes a while to iron everything out. I would seriously wait a few days at least

Well I didn't have a choice in the end, it just decided to get off its arse and update. It might have been nice if it had involved me in some of the decision making though, its like being in a loveless marriage! :'(

It would have been so, so much easier to just have a link to download the .exe to update.

Seems this whole app store thing is at least 3 steps backwards.
