Could someone post instructions for applying thermal compound to CPU?

I have an AMD 4000+ that seems to be running a little too warm. I want to take off the stock heat sink and fan, remove any existing compound, re-apply compound and put everything back together. Problem is, I don't have a clue how to do this. Could someone help?

1. How do I remove the old compound?
2. How much of the new compound do I apply and where do I apply it?
3. What brand of thermal compound should I get and where can I get it?

Thanks!!!

About as good as you are going to get...Just following the instructions for your specific processor type.

Artic Silver Application Instructions

I have found Oops! found at most Auto Zones to be extrememly effective removing most TIM's...Especially the dreaded "pink bubblegum" variety...91% or better Isopropyl Alchool is great for that final clean up before applying the TIM.

Just follow the amount recommended for your specific processor.

Artic Silver 5 will give you the best temps...For long term installations I prefer Artic Silver Ceraminque.

Q Tips and 91% Isoproply Alcohol will easily remove Shin Etsu.

If do not have a bunch of experience mounting heat sinks, I recommend mounting the heat sink and then removing it to make sure you have a good contact patch between the heat sink and processor.

Much like the last picture on THIS page.

Better safe than sorry and the time required to mount it twice is well worth it to make sure you are making contact and that the pattern is right.

Do I need to remove the cpu from the motherboard before cleaning it and applying the thermal compound? Or, can I work with the cpu in the motherboard?
