Could someone explain the AMD Rating System...

Hi,

I was always under the impression that AMD called their chips XP + etc, because they wanted to advertise to general joe public that although their CPUs ran at a lower frequency that the longer clock cycles meant that they ran at an equivalent speed to their selling name.

Hence an Athlon XP 3000+ at ~2Ghz was as fast as its rival, the P4 3Ghz.

However, I'm now looking for a dirt cheap laptop, and some have the Sempron 3000+ CPU, which I though meant that it ran at it's rivals equivalent (Celeron M I presume) of 3Ghz, which confuses me as the Celeron M is around 2Ghz isn't it ?

Anyways, I'm lookin' a cheap laptop and not sure whether to go the Sempron 3000+ route, the Celeron M, or Pentium M route (Pentium M has smaller HDD).

Information and advice appreciated,
Thanks.

The Celeron M like the Pentium M are not like the Pentium 4. Link to the exact models you are thinking.

I would choose a Turion 64 or a Pentium M due to speed and battery life. I think you will find the Turion a little less, which is why I choose it, but if very cheap, and you don't care about battery life, I am sure the Sempron is a fine choice also.

The Sempron 3000+ is compared to the Celeron D at 3ghz.
Anyhow, in the case of the Sempron versus Celeron M, I'd imagine, depending on what you're doing, the Sempron M is within + or - 200mhz of the Celeron M in performance. However, the Sempron still has AMD's cool n' quiet technology for longer battery life (or is it called powernow?) while speedstep is disabled on the Celeron M.

I'd say the Sempron.... But my favorite is the Compaq 2410US Turion 64. Maybe a little more money though

At a guess I'd say the Acer is a decent bit better, cause to upgrade the Dell from a Celeron® M Processor 380 to 740 costs an extra £117.

Yeah, the Acer should offer a good 20-30% more power than the Dell, due to a more powerful Sempron CPU and on-die memory control.

Wow, fanbois are at it again.

The Mobile Sempron64 2800+ 1.6Ghz is INFERIOR to a 1.4Ghz Celeron-M/1MB in general performance:

Given general platform, the Sempron is also INFERIOR in battery life. Anyone who tells you that a 3000+ Mobile Sempron64 can significantly outperform a Celeron-M 380 is flat-out misleading at the very best.
