could repeated power failures (like i had in houston) screw up my comp?

A little help here...
Ive been banging my head trying to figure out why my HD and mobo have been acting stupid. Heres the situation now. My mobo doesnt detect hds anymore, and my maxtor wont work in any computers (it makes a beeping sound, I assume it means its not working).

But before the total failure, my stuff was working still. It did have some problems like not detecting the hd upon startup, so I took it over to my other computer. The files were still intact, so I ran a virus detector and it found nothing. But then later the automatic scandisk that appears when you dont shutdown properly came up and said my disk had some "bad sectors that could not be repaired." So I ran a scan disk in windows and it said it had no problems. So I took it back over to the alleged busted computer and tried to install windows. It wouldnt detect my hd again. So the next day I tried it again, but this time my hd was making the aforementioned beeping sound. And thats where I'm at now.

Confused, I have a couple theories. First being a virus got to me and screwed my mobo and my hd. And two, the power failures that happened 4-5 times(as reported by my mom) on wednesday evening to my town outside Houston. It came on, then shut off, then came on, etc etc...all while I was asleep.
The weird thing is why didnt my hd/mobo just stop working suddenly, rather than this slow deterioration it appears to have gone thru?

power surges or outages don't always kill computer parts dead instantly, lotta times you'll have parts that appear to be working but in fact have been damaged and cause all sorts of odd, hard to sort out tech problems that end up costing big in terms of tech trouble shooting hours.

My first thought would be to perhaps borrow a known good HD from a friend and try it on the suspected damaged board to help you isolate the problem.

Yeh...I did that...I have a spare 15gig maxtor from compusa. The mobo had problems detecting it also...guess I'm just screwed then. 🙁
