Could Really Use Some Help Identifying a Lockup Problem

ok, put together this sytem over the weekend:

Albatron PX845PEV
P4 1.8a
512 Megs of Corsair 3000 Ram Cas2 Plat. XMS
Antec True480 PS
WinXp Pro
Alpha Pal Heatsink with Sanyo Denkei Fan
modded well ventilated case (with MBM 5 I was getting Sys and CPU temps btw 28-34 degrees cel)
AND THE PROBLEM CHILD, A RADEON 9700.

i let my system run for about a day. i did some overclocking thanks to CMDRDREDD (thanks again) and everything looked great. at first i was only checking the web, downloading my favorite programs and playing MP3's. first issue started when i tried to run 3dmark2001se. system immediately locked up on the first test (with and without overclock), sometimes the car wouldnt even load, it would freeze on the loading screen of test 1. i loaded a few games including BF1942 and same issues. the movie in BF 1942 would play but as soon as i picked a battleground and chose a side, it froze.

i then spent the next 24 hrs memorizing my product key for WINXP, in excess of 10 clean installs 🙂 its a good thing i havent activated it yet. i tried every Radeon driver and every fix listed at rage3d. no luck, immediate lockups. the wife and dog wanted me out of the house!

anyway, someone recommended downloading powerstrip and turning down the clock of my 9700. i gave it a shot and it worked! went to 275core and 264 memory and 3dmark2001 ran no prob. score wasnt even bad 10650 with an underclocked video card, no tweaks on my system.

with that said, i can't imagine underclocking my video card being the real solution and that it probably means something else is the issue. any ideas on what the culprit could be? could it be a bad card if it runs well underclocked? temps dont seem to be a prob.

thanks in advance for any advice!!

OK, here is probably a stupid question so don't get insulted, but did you hook up the extra power connector on the video card ?? There have been way too many people on this site with no problems with this video card, and only a few with random problems, so I can't believe that the card is that bad.

hey Mark, fan is plugged in 🙂 actually one of the fixes was to be sure that the video card was the only item on one of your PS connectors. appreciate the help though, sometime the obvious gets overlooked.
