What does a Democracy do when its representatives are openly hostile to the Bill of Rights?

Rand Paul is trying to correct the most anti-American abuse of power our generation has seen and the Senate majority is flat out ignoring the issue on their way to shove through the renewal of the Patriot Act.

Could somebody tell me how the patriot act works with non citizens? Is the patriot act needed to wiretap a foreigner who is under any kind of suspicion ?

It's been a while since I've spent any time on the Pat Act, so I could very well be wrong.

But as regards foreigners, we have always been able to wiretap etc as long as both (foreign) parties are outside of the USA. The 4th would not apply to foreigners on foreign soil.

However, if their communication routes through the USA, as email might, then the Pat Act allows us to wiretap w/o first getting a warrent IIRC.

Hopefully that's (mostly) correct, and if not perhaps someone who remembers better can come along with better info.

My how things change.

Seems not too long ago the Dems/Lefties/Progressives were screaming about the Patriot Act, and now they've beefed it up and want to extend it while a Repub wants to stop it.

One Republican not the party as a whole. They have control of the house and have 40 in the Senate.

BOTH parties are at fault here if it passes again.

There's no such thing as republican or democrat, just government.
