Could pc2400 ram be the cause of massive slowdowns in games...

Just curious. My friend just dropped off his pc for me to look at. HE says everything is fine and speedy till he loads up a game. And everything in the game is smooth UNTIL he comes across some kind of enemy.

For example: Halflife 2. Everything is smooth in the game (ie: high frame rates) until he hits an enemy and it goes down hill from there. It begins to lag. I didn't beleive him, but i tried starting a new game and sure enough everything is smooth with NPCs and prescripted events, but once he comes across an enemy the frames dive to 10FPS. This is on 1024*768 medium details.

I got to shower now and accomplish a few things, but would anyone have an idea what is going on? I'll pull the mobo later to see what it is, but I memttested it for a whlie and it passed. Only thing was I noticed pc2400 ram (which is what, 150mhz?)

I know the P4C ultimately run best with 200mhz ram dualchanneled, and it seems a little far fetched that it could be the slower ram that does it, but its my first guess and I'm not an intel buff at all.

Any help, I would appreciate it .

P.S. Sorry about the horrible grammar, but I REALLLY need to do a #2 atm 😉

you need at least PC3200 in single channel. that is the requirement for uncrippleness.

maybe you can tell him to get some cheap single 512MB stick or 2x512MB in dual channel...should be under 100 bucks.

I understand the P4 is very hungry for memory bandwith, but is that enough to create the following symptoms?

edit:

It is an Asus P4C800 Rev 2.0

Yes, the P4 performance will be completely killed by such slow ram, and if he's running single channel as well, that makes it much worse. If he's hitting the page file, and has a slow hard drive, that would do it as well. Have him reboot the computer, run HL2 till he gets to where he lags. THen exit the game, look in task manager, performance tab. look under commit charge, if the peak is higher than 1gb, then he's paging, and thats causing a good bit of lag, especialy if it's like a 5400rpm hard drive.

The drive is a raptor actually 😉 and it is on a fresh install. He said he reinstalled it many times.

Now if P4 preformance is killed by slow ram, why is the lag not consistent? I Just want some more opinions right now before I do further tests (ie: take out my ram and test it in his pc)
