could pairs of individual wires in cat-5 cable effectively do this?

im trying to make a simple plug for my car-puter system... if i could wire all 8 wires (2 power, 4 LED, 2 reset) into 1 cat-5 jack, would that work to carry the amperage necessary for this application?

a diagram is probably necessary..

here

essentially, it'll just be going together into an ethernet cable for simplicity's sake while travelling accross the car, and for jacking into the computer. inside, it'll branch off and go to the motherboard just like it normally would (except that i'd have another power switch wired on paralell available only from within the case)

hi,
yes, none of those are high current signals so it should work fine.
check out the gauge of the leads to the front of any computer case, they're pretty thin.
good luck.

Ironically a good friend of mine thought of this exact idea, and we wired it into the car to try it and it worked fine!

Ill point him to this thread when i speak to him, he may even have some more detailed info for you on it 🙂

Dan 🙂

damn.. i found my cat-5 cable stash, but i cant seem to find my crimpers and jacks... oh well... i shall continue looking...

You could do it the way we did it and just twist them together and seal them with tape.

Or use telecom cable crimp loops to join them at either end? 🙂

well, see, it has to be quick release, and it has to be simple.

i'll be taking this out of my car and putting it back in fairly often. so that's why i want actual cable with jacks and plugs and such.

Heh...yeah, as Dan said, we did this in my car!!

I did it the slightly less elaborate way of taking the cat5 cable and splicing the cat5 wires to the wires that went to the front-panel of an old ATX case, then plugging the headers into the motherboard.

A much better way, but that would require a jack, would be to use any standard cat5 cable, and punch the wires from the ATX headers into the jack, and the same at the other end, where it will go to a pair of switches and LEDs (i used the "business end" of the front-panel connector i cut the wires from)

i have plenty of jacks, if i could only find them. i'm still looking for my jacks, plugs, and crimpers. 🙁
