Could not start the Human Interface Device Access service

I had installed on my computer an HDTV tuner card, which for lack of a securing screw, was pulled out, tweaked off, the PCI connection with a small tug on the external cable while running the cards program. After reinserting the card, it worked fine, but the IR remote that runs through a connection on the card as a USB device, has since failed to operate or communicate with the system.

Using Dvicos help FAQ, I checked to see if the HID was listed in the device manager, and alas it was not. On attempt to start the service, I get the above error 126 module not found. I am unfarmiliar with this service and what exactly is meant by module. I am assuming module means software and adaptor means hardware.

The Dvico Fusion5 RT remote app is running with the tuner software, but I am not able to use the remote I paid the extra $50 for. This remote is also supposed to be usable for my DVD software and Media Player etc, so it would be very nice to have this operational.

Any ideas? Fix it thoughts?

May sound cliche, but unplug all that hardware, uninstall drivers, and put everything back togheter again.

You could do a couple of things:

1. Use XP's "System Restore" and set the restore date back to just before this problem first occurred. In other words, if the problem happened on Wednesday, see if there's a Tuesday restore date available, or Monday, etc. Get as close as you can to the actual failure date while still being before the failures occurred.

2. OR -- You can try the tip in this thread. It involves extracting a few files from the Windows XP Cab file. It's all outlined here:

I am organizing "my documents" and all my downloaded programs into neat 4.7gb clumps to drop onto a box of DVDRWs, at which point in a while I will reinstall the original "image" from PCClub and reinstall all my toys.

Before I try that, should the HID service start or give an error without anything connected? Specifically, is it only a service that can start with an actual working device or adaptor plugged into the system?

Did you try my suggestions above? They are certainly less drastic than a full reinstall. If it's s a simple matter of a couple of files to be extracted, or a restoration from a couple of days back, I would think that might be less troublesome than a full-blown reinstall. Your choice, though. Can't hurt to have DVD backups of documents, no matter what you decide.

As far as the service goes, you can test what it will do if you set it to Manual vs. Automatic, as it now seems to be set. In Manual mode, the service should only run if it's called by something that needs it.

Run
(type in without quotes the following
"services.msc"
Click OK
Services list will come up, in alphabetical order.

You can then double click on the HID Input Service, and change the "Startup Type:" to Manual. Then click Apply.

Reboot.

If you get the error, that means that something is definitely calling it.

I should tell you that mine is set to Automatic, and it is in "Stopped" mode vs. "Started" mode, which tells me I have nothing installed which uses that service. If I did, it would show "Started".

So, I'm thinking your remote components are definitely looking for the HID service. But, test it yourself in Manual mode and reboot.

Again, though, unless you've already tried it, I'd go with the Restore or extraction test, first, before reformatting.

At the time the problem occured, I was installing little things here n there and after several days, I tried to fix the remote. I sorta assumed rightly or not that the card coming out of the slot was what caused the p[roblem and I had done a cleanup on my disk and deleted all the old restore points.

Since the computer is new, I wanted to get everything I would end up using on it installed and make sure it was funtioning, run it awhile to see if anything cropped up, then backup my downloaded programs and my documents, reinstall it to new, and put only the things I use. I downloaded and tried a lot of lame software and apps and I am sure I have junk on here thats guna clog me up in the future. As things stand now, I have absolutely no backups of anything so doing a a reinstall is probably simpler than trying to tweak stuff. If after a full reinstall......I will try to get the TV card and remote working first......if I still have the HID problem, then I know the card most likely is not happy.

I will do all this in a wek or so, until then I will check back here to see if anyone thinks of any easy fixes for me.
