Could it finally be time to buy a DVD burner?

$350 retail for that sony is kind of tempting. If I was doing hardcore data backup or had a minidv camera I might consider it. Otherwise it seems like a waste of money for me.

No. Not until I see at least 24x DVD burners for $100 or less. Should happen in about 3 years.

I just bought a Pioneer DVD burner for a little below $300.

I do a lot of digital video editing, since i am a wannabe film maker...plus gives me one place to store a lot of MP3's.
We'll see how this works out.

And RossMan..that is my only nightmare.....40x in no time.

the price is right, but i'm not going to buy until they make ones that can write to dual layers. i have 240 gb of combine hd space, i don't need dvd for the space, i just need it to backup my movies. or rather copy movies, so i don't have to risk scratching the originals.

In your case, buying a DVD Burner is justified but I have absolutely no use for one.

I remember a friend paying $269 for a Smart & Friendly 2/2/4 CD-RW about 3 years ago at Fry's B&M when CD-RW's first trickling into the consumer market. About 1.5-2 years ago I bought a Plextor 12/10/32A for $200 from Onvia.com which at that time was a great price (everyone else was paying $250 plus shipping). Now I look at my Plextor and wince in agonizing pain since you can now buy a 40x CD-RW for $20 after coupon/rebates/jumping through some hoops.

So that's why I'll be waiting until at least 2005 to buy a DVD Burner. I want a format to be standardized and for consumer DVD Players to be able to read burned DVDs without so much as a hiccup.

Me too Ross. I paid $150 for my 24x Plextor, and just 2 days ago I ordered a 40x liteon for $60 for a friend. Like you said, many can be found for even less.

Ugh.
