my car won't start...

I just replaced my battery ~two months ago, so i don't think it could be the battery. Heres what it sounds like... when i turn the key its kind of a relatively high pitched grinding noise that keeps going up until i release the key, no cranking, could it be that my starter? i don't think my alternator has anything to do with it....

here are some stats...2000 Jetta Vr6
1. 86,000 miles
2.sparkplugs changed @ 50,000
3. battery changed in Nov-Dec of 2003.

so should i swap in a new starter or get it towed to the dealer and have then run a diagnostic for 90, charge me 2 hours of labour @85hr and XXX for the parts

does the griding sound like something is actually turning? Do your lights go dead when you try starting?

start w/ checking your connections to your battery. Sometimes if the connection is poor everything will work, until you try starting. might as well eliminate all the possible Cheap solutions

I'm not an expert, but couldn't it be missing teeth on the flywheel, especially if it only does it once in a while.

it is most likely the bendix spring of your starter. That highpitched whine is the electric motor of the starter working at full force with no load on it, therefore it spings quite quickly.
