Could it be an overclocking problem?

Here is my story: I bought a leadtek 6600GT agp. I installed it. It worked great. I noticed the performance wasnt that great, so I OCed it. Now, i have a 300 watt PSU, with 17A on the 12V rail and other what nots...its a good/decent PSU (especially for 300watts)...and it runs the 6600gt fine...well, i noticed no improvement with the OC, but left it anyway. Then my mom said that when she was on the internet, the computer randomly shut off...hmm....I put it back to stock speeds and then updated the drivers...no problems since then

what could it be?

1. Overclock ran PSU out of power (but I overclocked the 3d speeds, not 2d, and the internet is 2d...hmm)
2. crappy leadtek 66.93 drivers (could be, as my computer does weird stuff with older drivers)

thanks for help

If you left the 2d settings alone, overclocking should have nothing to do with just regular internet surfing. Usually an excessive overclock on the videocard wouldn't randomly reboot the computer. You would get artifacts at first, then a hard lock, and maybe a BSOD. 2d doesn't put any load on the GPU either, so it is not a temperature problem.

If anything, I feel this is not a video problem, but if it will make you feel any better, just update your drivers to Nvidia's latest WHQL (71.84s), and leave it at that.

If it happens again, then its something to worry about, until then, IMO, this was a freak accident.

yeah prolly. i had the 66.93 drivers from leadtek at that time (they sucked terribly) but now i have the XG 71.84...would the actuall WHQL drivers be more stable though? ( i dont think mine are beta...)

I feel that Nvidia's WHQL drivers are better than any modded driver in regards to stability. I also feel that any modded driver is also a beta, regardless if it was modded from an offical release. While those XG drivers might offer better performance, I always felt beta/unoffical releases weren't worth the headaches for an extra 1-2fps.

I do not feel this is a video problem, just update your drivers to Nvidia's latest WHQL (71.84s), and leave it at that.

k thank you for being the only one to help me 😉 i'll go get me some of those driver goodnesses...uh...right now! 😉

but really, thanks

Oh wait, with overclocking i am aware that you use more power than with stock settings. What kind of problems will i notice if my power supply can't keep up with an OC vs just overclocking it too high (no PSU problems)

I don't know if anyone has done any specific tests regarding voltage and clock speeds, so I can't comment on that.

But however, you said your mother was just on the internet looking around when this happened. I feel it is safe to assume that little to no load was placed on the CPU and GPU. With such little power drain, the PSU should NOT be stressed. I do not feel this is a power problem either.

I would just wait until it happens again, for all you know, it might been a power surge.
