Hi guys i just picked up some new components for a build. pretty much everything in my sig that says in progress.

here it comes.

when i first got everything, i installed everything accordingly, then i plugged it in and it doesnt boot at all. no lights nothing. i tried to tinkle around with no success. when i called a tech at microcenter he suggested that i switch my ram to the corsair vengeance. (didnt work). then i thought it was my mobo that was broken, so i got a new one. (didnt work). then i tried a new psu. (didnt work). i also tried remounting the hsf and nothing works...

Could it really be my luck that i happened to get DOA cpu??!?

Need more information. Do you have a PC speaker hooked up? What series of beeps does it emit? Does the motherboard get power? What happens precisely when you power on? Do your CPU fans come on? "Don't work" is pretty vague, need to be more specific about what happens when you attempt to power up, and also you need to rule out PSU / video card issues / cabling issues.

no speakers hooked up, no beeps no lights. all i hear when i push the power button is a slight short buzz from the psu, which should mean that the board has power because the electrical current can travel to my power button. but it happened with the other psu i have as well. i didnt put in a GPU yet. as it has onboard video.

Does the PSU continue running or immediately shut off? Or does the PSU fan continue running? If it shuts off immediately at that point you have a short somewhere in your chassis or wiring. This will cause modern PSU's to power down immediately before your PC posts. If this happens you should remove everything from the chassis (remove the motherboard bracket as well) and run the motherboard on a foam or antistatic pad, and check all connectors.

First off, you didn't say whether your PSU continues running or stops. Does the PSU fan run or not, or does it stop. What kind of PSU is it anyway? If the PSU continues running after power on, and you confirmed the PSU is running/continues running, your problem is elsewhere.

If your PSU automatically shuts off after an attempted power on:

If it the PSU shuts itself down, you need to do this the hard way....take your motherboard and your entire internal components out and run them on an antistatic/foam pad. Strip your computer bare, no drives, no USB, no video card, no sound card, NOTHING. Unscrew your motherboard OFF its chassis backplate. Use 1 stick of RAM and thats it. Then try to power on.

the psu does not power on at all. it attemps to (buzzes)turn on. after the buzz the psu is off, the fan never comes on.

I did what u said n took out my board unconnected everything, put it on antistatic, with one stick of ram. same thing happens. no fan movement , just a buzz that lasts about half a second.

Is the PSU new? What brand & specs?

Yeah, something is going awry. If its not a short, then its a PSU issue.

A dead CPU will not cause your PSU to power down. Your PSU should continue running -- and thePSU fan should continue running.....even if your CPU is dead. The PSU does not shut off unless its a) faulty b) not providing sufficient power or c) has a short somewhere.

Before you do, try it again. This time when it gets a buzz, press & hold the front PC power switch for 10 seconds. Then wait 5 seconds, then press it again normally (no holding). I used to encounter this problem whenever I got into the insides of my old system. It was either a mobo or PSU problem as far as I can tell, and I tried two different PSUs (not quality ones).

If that doesn't work, get a good quality PSU first to try it out. Like Blackened stated, it's unlikely to be the CPU. If it still doesn't work, it has to be the mobo.

I guess this goes without saying, but, what two PSUs (exact models) are you attempting to power this system on with? Does your board require an 8pin auxilliary as opposed to a 4pin aux, and if so, did you plug in the right cable? Some PCI-e cables are 8pin and you may have confused them.

Look at your pins on the board.I hosed my 2600k from switching cpus around so much and after I looked at my p67 pro boards lga pins 2 lityle pins were touching.

My problems first were no post in dual channel memory and then slowly no post at all.

My 2600k is done now and Im rma the board with asus and its taking forever.

I'm calling intel tom to see if they will cover a new chip.

When you bench test the rig like others eaod check out the cpu pins on the board.

You can also test the power supplies without the board by momentarily connecting the black and green wires in the center of the Molex connector that plugs into the board. If you suspect the CPU, remove it and see if the fans will spin when you power up the board.

Forget about trying anything else.

Take the motherboard out of the case.
Set the board on the table / floor on top of the electrostatic bag it came with.
Take the power supply out from the case and plug it into board.
Leave everything else unplugged.

I guarantee that it will power up if you have a short between the board and case.

Don't electrocute yourself lol.

He's tried this and according to the OP it didn't work. But I agree from his description of the problem (PSU shutting down immediately) it sure does sound like a short or PSU problem.

Thanks for the help guys! some how the problem was with my psu. i dont know how but it was. It was still working perfectly fine with my other rig. i bought a corsair 750w professional psu and it powered on no problem.

the psu i had was a combo item i bought with something else. the psu apparently is "terrible" just like the reviews for the stealthxstream line of the ocz psu's. im problably going to rma it. if not then ill just get another corsair thats cheaper than the 750w gold pro that i got to checked with.

thanks again!

I've been burned by bad PSUs a couple times. In one case an Antec burned out my motherboard so I had to redo the build. BAD Antec! Sorry to see OCZ's quality is so bad. Live and learn. Corsair seems to have a very good record these days, which is of course what I have.
