Could I buy a cheap AMD that would get me 4ghz?

If I get a better cooler (currently Thermalright Ultra 120 ,not extreme) that can keep my chip below 55C then I believe I can hit 3.8ghz, possibly 3.9ghz. I've already hit those speeds before but at 56C either prime fails or my machine locks. Problem with my cooler on my mobo is it points up to the top of the case...if it exhausted out the back I bet I could get much better thermals.

Benefit of replacing the chip would be I could go higher than my current 230mhz bus speed. Going from 200 to 230mhz was a huge jump in performance at my idle speeds (2.2ghz), so more of that would be welcome.

TBH, I haven't seen too many 4th-core unlocked 720BE that get much past 3.6ghz stable. And you were able to do 2.6ghz on NB also -- nice. Just wondering...is there anything you are doing, gaming or otherwise, that would be better at 3.9-4.0ghz vs 3.5-3.6 ?

i got one of those Regor Athlon 2 chips, dual core. did a 30% OC no problem, from 2.9 to 3.7 - with the stock cooler, by bumping the FSB (or something) from 200 to 260.

i think you could get 4.0+ no problem (probably), if you started with the top of the line Regor - especially with that heatsink. 3.3 GHz & $75

i wasn't sure if you were talking dual or quad - seems like a lot of people are getting 4.0 out of the quad AMD's too.

If you want 4Ghz, look to the hex-core AMDs. They are based on a slightly different process tech than the quad-cores, and they clock higher.

I think 3.8 is basically kind of the limit for regular Phenom II chips.

mainly the 20 tabs that open in firefox when I click "go to home page"...firefox is single threaded...I've just moved to opera 11 to compensate for the laggy UI while firefox is rendering.

I guess this is really just about a higher #.

Yeah figured the hexacores. Can't really justify the cost of that.
