Would these 2 families have enough money to rebuild the entire city themselves?

I don't know. The Waltons were pretty poor. I mean look at that POS tuck John Boy had to drive. Doubt they could do much for NO.

They have enough men in the family to help with cleanup, maybe even rebuild a few houses.

Well, sure, but then you'd have stop lights that would display "please wait" for ten or twenty minutes and then mysteriously crash, highways that you'd have to uninstall and then re-install from scratch any time you changed a street sign, and when everybody was settled back in, the whole city would disappear in a giant "blue screen of death" (again).

We can rebuild it, we have the technology... we can make it better, stronger, faster...

Kind of off the subject - but some day I would like to be wealthy enough to own a moderate size town. Every building would be equiped with solar panels and solar heating. All inter-town transportation would be based on enclosed sidewalks and high speed trollies - no roads inside the town. It would be wired with fiber optic and provide high speed wireless. There would also be a Negative Employment Tax (incentive to hire) combined with a positive Income tax - but there would be no property taxes.

Only if they liquidated Microsoft and Wal-Mart. It's not like they swim through their money like Scrooge McDuck...

Dude, imagine if you moved to a dirt poor foreign country where the money's worth less than the paper it's printed on. You COULD do that!

I bet if the US cancelled welfare and 3rd world country aid, they would have plenty left over...

This site constantly updates Gates' net worth according to current stock prices. Also some cool little facts about how much money that really is.

They'll never disclose the true cost of rebuilding NO (assuming they try to rebuild). The cost is going to be so staggering, if they said it out loud people would demand they stop trying. What they'll do is report the numbers in smaller pieces and divide the work up across multiple agencies so no one can figure it all out.

200,000 buildings need to be torn down and hauled away.
Each one has to be searched for hazardous chemicals before they destroy it.
Sewer lines, water lines need to be rebuilt.
And after all that, then you can maybe start actually putting new buildings back up.
And the work on strengthening the levees and other flood control issues, because they'll say that they need to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. Billions for that.
And the work on the Superdome - what's another $200 million?
And you can be sure that all the public buildings that have been damaged, they will try to get replaced instead of repaired. Why not? It's not their money.
Oh, we'll need all new buses for our schools, plus billions for new mass transit systems.

Remember that we're talking about one of the most corrupt cities and states in the nation, so figure a huge amount of the money will be skimmed off by the people in power.

Also remember that due to over-regulation of everything that is done with public money, there will have to be environmental impact studies done, inspections, etc. all requiring high-priced "consultants". That's probably 25% of the money gone right there.

They'll never even come close to rebuilding for $300 billion. If they gave every single person affected by this $100,000 and wished them good luck, it would be an order of magnitude cheaper than trying to rebuild NO. Oh, heck, make it $250,000 each!

They should just keep the areas that didn't flood (French Quarter, etc.), level the flooded parts, and call it a day.

No, if he sold all his stock for cash, the market would crash, or take a dive. Not to mention that NO rebuilding costs 100s of billions

nope. the place is a disaster, it has to be cleaned, leveled, and built anew. Just the cleaning and elimination of the old foundations, wreakage would be too costly.

i say just bury the city...turn it into one GIANT resivoir...make it some sorta atlantis preserved for time...
Whats going to suck is this is going to affect ALL of us in the long run, the cost will be passed on in our taxes and as well in the price of insuring houses since the massive ammount the insurance companies will have to shell out for this.

That would have been funny in 1998... :)
