what sucks is that those people living in the high mountains have to just sit there all day/night and wait for the beacons of gondor to be lit. What a boring job/life that would be. I'd go nuts if I had to stay up there forever.

Dude, think about how far away the horizon is when you are standing on flat ground. It's a lot less than 50 miles.

Dude, think about how far away the horizon is when you are standing on flat ground. It's a lot less than 50 miles.

For someone who is 6 feet tall, the horizon is 3 miles away at sea level (since we're approximating here). If there were another person 6 feet tall, you could see them when they are 6 miles away. If you want to do 50 mile separation, you'd need to build some towers too (approx 164 feet tall, actually a little more since it's not really at sea level).
