Could any one explain to me what's with the Corsage/Boutonniere tradition?

Okay.. I am attending the prom this year but I am not exactly sure about the corsage/boutonniere tradition. I asked my date about it, but apparently she wasn't so sure either.... She said that she'll ask her friends...
But meanwhile, could any one tell me more about it? I mean do we exchange corsage/boutonniere with each other or what? what about the color/style?

thx

Alright...I don't know all about the tradition of it. But here's what I did when I was in high school. You order the corsage, and make sure it matches to your date's dress. She orders the boutenniere. The you exchange them (put them on each other) before dinner or whatever. Makes for a romantic moment..and a good photo op for the parents.

That's the gist of it. Actually that's all of it.
