if china were to take hostile actions against taiwan and the UN slapped a total trade embargo on them, would china be able to last long before giving into UN demands? or could they be self suffecient?

One Taiwan is considered by most of the world as a province of mainland china.

Second, did an embargo have any effect on Iraq or Cuba.

China is to big and has way to much influence.
Look what happended at T square many years ago. rHot Air and Smoke from the world bodies only.

China isnt as dependant on international trade like most other western countries, wait 15-25 years and then it might have an affect, but right now no

I think China is full of confidence right now as an emerging super power and something like UN sanctions would really set their temper and cause large-scale warfare, if not Cold War 2.

Sure it would help out.............France. Russia would not honor it as they share a border, and things could heat up too quick for tastes. U.N. sanctions are useless. 12 years of sanctions in Iraq did what again?

Except for the fact that the western world has a HUGE trade with China, and it would costs just as many jobs here.

Imposing a trade Embargo on China would cripple the economies of most Western Nations and Japan. So it isn't going to happen.

Trade embargo on China ?
Why bother - they would just go back into the isolationist mode that they used to be in.
They really don't need us, and we are just taking advantage of their cheap labor.
They got along internally for some 3000+ years without 'Western' trade, and could
just withdraw and continue, without them missing a lick.

The US and all western nations recognize Taiwan as part of China. Hence any action would be internal and outside the jurisdiction of international bodies. Taiwan's groups that want seperation should just keep their mouths shut. China won't act against Taiwan unless they try to sepparate.

The UN would NEVER pre-emptively strike against China. They would have to wait until 2 million taiwaneese were dead before they could do ANYTHING. Isn't that right libs?

Yes you should keep your mouths shut unless you want 10,000 missles to hit the island. This isn't Al Queda this is China, they have a million plus army, 10's of thousands of missles and they have been ramping out amphibious capability. The US will not go to war with China again, population numbers alone give them superiority in combat, and we certaintly aren't going to go to war because a bunch of chinese don't want to be part of china anymore. The US should release a statement to the Taiwanesse people that the US will not defend Taiwan in the event of a vote in support of seperation from China.

Bwhahaha. Yeah if Al-Queda wasn't attacking us, and had more to loose by attacking us then by doing nothing, that would be a valid argument.

Actually China has only about 500 conventional missiles aimed at Taiwan. (Realisticly China isn't going to nuke Taiwan since their goal is unification.) While they finally are ramping up their amphibious capabilities, they are currently still quite limited. Right now a Chinese invasion of Taiwan would fail miserably, even without the US assisting Taiwan. I discussed the reasons why in a recent thread if you want me to link to it.
