Could a damaged psu result in a "disk read error"?

I think I had a power surge/outage last night. I woke up and found out that both of my PC's had reset. I tried to bootup my main rig and I got a "disk read error occurred". So I opened the case and reseated my drive connections as well as the memory just to rule those things out. I checked the BIOS to make sure none of the settings had changed. In short none of those fixed the problem, so I'm thinking that maybe the drive or the PSU is damaged.

I'm using an Acer AM5630-U5209A, my cpu is a q6600 and I installed an 8800gt along with a Cooler Master 650 psu. It looks like after I get this problem fixed I'll have to invest in a UPS, I have what I thought was a decent surge protector but apparently its not good enough.

Will Cooler Master give me a replacement psu if it turns out to be damaged? I bought it back in February so it is'nt even a year old yet.

Since a PSU provides power to the system, incorrect amount of wattage or varying degrees of voltages can damage parts in a PC, like a hard drive for example. The hard drive could have been corrupted or damaged by the PSU. Lemme guess: you have the Cooler Master Extreme Power 650W right? Just an FYI, that's actually a semi-decent Seventeem 450W PSU that's been overrated by Coolermaster to be a 650W PSU.

Contact CM and see if they will replace the PSU.
