I was following a play-by-play of the sanctions hearing yesterday and... oh dear. The team for Powell/Wood/et. al. was mounting a defense so obviously poor that it's a wonder they didn't get punished on the spot. It's more a question of how strict the sanctions are rather than whether they'll exist in the first place.

The CNN article in the OP doesn't do a good job of explaining it but this proceeding is in federal court, not state court.

OK, that makes sense. I seem to recall that you can separately lose your license to practice in the federal courts. Be that as it may, I don't think some of these articles are accurate in talking about disbarment "in Michigan."

And the sanctions are:

That "the lawyers reimburse the attorneys' fees that the city of Detroit and Michigan state officials paid in seeking the sanctions. The lawyers must also take legal education classes, the judge said, and she is referring her decision to the Michigan Attorney Grievance Commission, and 'the appropriate disciplinary authority for the jurisdiction(s) where each attorney is admitted," for potential disciplinary action.'''

And they apply to "Sidney Powell, Lin Wood and several other lawyers who worked on Trump-aligned lawsuits seeking to challenge the results of the 2020 election."

Those fees could be very hefty. The rest of it is nothing unless the other jurisdictions take action.

The reality is, these grifters will easily fund raise from the duped Trump base to pay any and all fees. After tying this up in appeals forever, that is...

The art of the grift.

Not particularly stiff beyond the court costs, but I won't be surprised if the real pain comes from those disciplinary authorities. If Giuliani can have his law license suspended in multiple states, I wouldn't be surprised if Powell/Wood face similar or worse consequences.

Hahahahahahaha Trump pay hahahahahahaha

Good luck!

Trump already played his classic "never heard of 'em" card with Powell — he definitely won't be paying these attorneys' legal fees.

It's another textbook example of Trump's golden rule: unless you're family, he will always throw you under the bus... it's just a question of when and how badly you get hurt. And even the family rule isn't locked in, since he has cheated on all his wives.
