could a 1.6 northwood run without fan?

I'm curious if the chip could run on a heatsink only and a case fan. Overclocking it sounds fun and all, but I dont see it doing much for my everyday use. A nice quiet computer would be wonderful. This chip is supposed to run very cool, so would this be possible? Thanks

I'm pretty sure a Northwood would post into windows with no HSF at all on the CPU. The chip will clock throttle itself when it gets to hot, and will just shutdown when it reaches a certain temp.

Not like AMD which will just burn up in about 10 seconds.

If you just put a HS on the CPU and no fan, you could probably run it for a few days I'm guessing, the fan on the retail sink is pretty much none existent anyways, it's only like 2800rpm.

I haven't tried on a P4 Northwood, but a Tualatin PIII or Celeron will run @ stock frequency undervolted to ~ 1.2 - 1.25 Vcore. I think a good HS and a PS duct to provide a little airflow would work.

How does a "PS Duct" work? Ive seen a cpu duct, as my dell has one, but I've never seen a PS duct in action. any pictures as well?

A P4 1.6A with a duct would definitely work; Intel has even demo'd the P4 in such configurations.

Also, note you can drop the P4 1.6A down to 1.4 volts (most will run at that lower voltage), it produces even less heat. I've heard you can get the P4 1.6A down to 20C or less idle using the stock Intel heatsink with lower voltage.

The P4 1.6 mobile processors are basically the Northwoods running at less voltage with incredibly small heatsinks...

The Pentium 4 has technology that causes it to throttle down clockspeed if the heat is too high, meaning that you can run a P4 WITHOUT a heatsink. There's no real need to run without a fan--the Pentium's 4's stock HSF is effective and VERY quiet.
