Coughing up blood

Last week I was feeling sick, had 102 fever, was coughing and my throat hurt. I suspected strep, so I went to the doctor with the intention of getting a throat culture done. He said that coughing goes very much against it being strep, and he suspected either flu or pneumonia. So he ordered a chest X-ray which came back fine and ruled out pneuomonia. Text

He then told me that I have the flu, and prescribed Tamiflu. My fever dissapeared but my throat is still hurting. I was coughing up some blood on Sunday so I called him. He called me back and said that as long as my fever was down I shouldnt worry about coughing up blood, as that can happen with the flu. He said the flu can sometimes attack the lining on the lung and wreak havoc. He said that as long as I am feeling better, I should probably heal on my own. If I start feeling feverish again I should probably come back in.

This morning I coughed up blood again, and I am still coughing up blood. I don't want to drive him crazy and call him again, but it has me worried. Who ever heard of coughing up blood from the flu? 😕
Does he know what he's talking about?
I'm pretty nervous about this.
I've had the flu before but I never coughed up blood in my life.

UPDATE: Went to another doctor.
He basically agreed withthe first doc, that it was caused by the flu, but he said that a secondary infection probably set in, which is causing me to cough more thereby irritating the throat and lungs more which is causing the bleeding.
He prescribed a cough supressant and antibiotic.

Red or Black blood? How much?

And yes, if you are unsure of the doctor's prognosis, get a second opinion.

Cough from influenza is almost always non productive (dry). Productive cough usually indicates bacterial infection, usually strep or staph. Get to the doctor or hospital and get some antibiotics.

The following medical conditions are some of the possible causes of Coughing blood.

* Respiratory conditions
o Bronchitis
o Pneumonia
o Tracheobronchitis (see Bronchitis)
o Respiratory infection
o Chest infection
o Lung disorders
o Lung infection
o Lung fibrosis
o Bronchiectasis
o Ruptured lung blood vessel - such as from coughing too hard.
o Coagulopathy
o Lung cancer
o Airway tumor
o Tuberculosis
o Fungal lung infection
o Bronchiectasis fungi
o Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis
o Parasitic lung infection
o Pneumonia
o Necrotic pneumonia
o Anerobic pneumonia
o Lung abscess
o Staphylococcal respiratory infection - may cause rusty or blood colored sputum.
o Serratia marcescens lung infection
o Respiratory trauma
o Lung injury
o Lung foreign body
o Pulmonary artery catheter
o Lung trauma
o Inhalation injury
o Pulmonary embolism
o Septic embolism
o Pulmonary artery rupture
o Lung vasculitis
o Wegener's granulomatosis
o Goodpasture's disease
o Swan-Ganz
o Rasmussen's aneurysm
o Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis
o Pulmonary helminth infection
o Paragonimus
o Echinococcus
o Arterial bronchial fistula

Most likely it's coming from a respiratory infection, but I would call him and say you are worried that you are still coughing up blood. It's your doc's job to take care of your medical needs and questions so don't feel like you are putting him out by calling again.

I'd get a second opinion. Never got the flu, but I've never heard of anyone coughing up blood from it. If you start feeling noticeably worse in a short period of time with no obvious cause, get to an emergency room FAST. Don't want to scare you, and this is really unlikely, but worst case scenario is you have minor internal bleeding.

Yes, but my fever would probably be up if I have strep or staph or any kind of infection. I really feel fine besides for my throat hurting and the blood.

If you are uncomfortable with the first doctor let him know and see what he says, then get a second opinion if you still feel you need to. beyond that I'm hesitant to give medical advice on the grounds I'd be talking out my ass. If you feel it is serious go to the hospital.

Dude you need to go to the hospital and get a second opinion! I wouldn't be creating a forum thread if I were coughing up blood!

When I worked a phone job I was coughing up blood and I had a doctor's note saying I needed to stay home and rest my voice but my boss still put me on written warning for missing work.

Turned out I had pneumonia. If the amount of blood coming out when you cough is only a tiny bit it could be that your throat is so irritated from coughing that it's raw and sore.
