CostCo

Before I drop the money on a CostCo membership, I've been wondering if shopping there will let me completely avoid shopping at the Wallyworld. Anyone help me out with this?

Not entirely. I mean if your intention is to do ALL of your shopping at Costco, that isn't going to happen.

I shop at Costco and never shop at Walmart, but I do get a lot of stuff at the grocery store.

No, Coscto doesnt have the sort of variety that Walmart has, Walmart is normally cheaper too, Costco has some stuff which you only get there, but for everyday shopping I still prefer Walmart

Well, I'll still do my grocery shopping at Publix & Bruno's.

Well, what exactly do you get at Walmart?

Hah... Walmart isn't cheaper than Costco if you compare identical products (in differing quantities of course). But Costco doesn't sell any cheap junk, so if that's your thing you'll have to keep buying it at Walmart. If you want quality merchandise at a good price, Costco is the way to go. Costco's generics aren't just as good as their brand-name alternative, they're often better.

Toiletries, cleaning supplies, general household basics that are not foodstuffs.

I've come to dread shopping at Wallyworld and am looking for ways to avoid it. The closest Target is 20 minutes and it feels kinda run-down. CostCo is 5 minutes away.

That kind of stuff you can certainly get at Costco.

Although nothing but Kleenex Cottonelle touches my butt, so I get that at Target. But Costco's toilet paper is very good.

Cleaning supplies - you can get a lifetime supply for a few bucks more than it'd cost you to get a single bottle at the grocery store. 🙂

Thanks for the info...the wife and I will now be avoiding Walmart like the plague. 🙂

Costco is good for bulk items. One thing I get there all of the time is pop 36 cans for $8 compared to 3 12 packs for $11.

If I buy on sale I can sometimes get them for $2.50 at the grocery store... they usually have a sale on one or two soda categories each week (i.e. 12 pack coke products, 2 liter pepsi products), but the amount of the discount varies, and Costco's prices are always low.

As far as the membership fee goes - well I made it back easily with the cashback bonus on my Costco Amex alone, and that's on top of what I already saved by shopping there. No, Costco isn't the best if you're a single guy who eats nothing but Ramen, but if you spend a reasonable amount of money at the grocery store, the $45 is nothing.

Costco Amex is 1% at Costco, 2% on travel, 3% on restaurants. I put two business trips on my Costco Amex, so that helped with the amount of cashback I got.

Before you go and show up at the register with a cartload of stuff, be aware that they only accept Amex, debit cards, cash and checks.

And their Amex has no annual fee. 🙂

I haven't been a single guy in quite some time. 😉

That being said, I think we're going to go ahead and get a membership.

I do watch the adds in the mail for the pop deals but on average Dr Pepper at Costco is $8 for 36 and the grocery stores in my area prices range from $2.50 a 12 pack to 3 for $11. If I were buying other things in bulk at Costco I would rather pay an extra 50 cents once in a while, instead of making another trip to a grocery store just for one item. I also like their meat prices.
